Airport history

Way back in 1910 the first aeroplane to take off from the site, a Moonbean 2, took flight, a craft made and tested by local flying pioneer Eric Rowland Moon. In 2008 the £5M redeveloped departure lounge opened and in 2009 the airport nearly doubled the check-in and baggage facilities with another £3M investment. In 2008 and 2009 it was named of the European winner of the ACI Airport People Award, two years in a row. And in 2010 Southampton airport celebrated its 100th birthday. Today what was once a tiny airfield looks after almost two million passengers a year.
