Where can you fly to from Doncaster-Sheffield? Doncaster Sheffield Airport basics

Doncaster Sheffield airport, AKA Robin Hood airport, is on the former site of RAF Finningley airbase, founded in 1915. It’s just three and a half miles south east of Doncaster and 18 miles east of Sheffield. The airport’s owners, the Peel Group, also owns Liverpool’s John Lennon airport, Durham Tees Valley and City Airport Manchester. Robin Hood looks after more than 800,000 passengers a year. Doncaster-Sheffield airport is famous for its role in the BBC mock documentary Come Fly With Me, starring Little Britain’s Matt Lucas and David Walliams. Why Robin Hood? The original legends were set in nearby Barnsdale Forest, and there was once a village pub in the village of Hatfield Woodhouse called the Robin Hood and Little John.

Airport information

The airport has twenty four check-in desks and six departure gates. There’s Wi-Fi access for passengers, provided by The Cloud. The shops and restaurants open in time for the first flight of the day, and usually shut after the last flight has disembarked. You’ll find an Alpha airport shopping outlet, WH Smith, J D Wetherspoons pub / eatery and a Costa Coffee for all your everyday airport essentials. And there are even gaming facilities to keep your kids and teens occupied. There’s a First Choice Kids Corner is in the departure lounge too, full of fun and games for little children.

Airport directions

By bus: You’ll find regular buses running between the airport and Doncaster, Barnsley, Retford, Worksop and further afield. There’s a network of six buses, all of which leave from the bus station outside the terminal. The AirLink Service 91 features extra-generous luggage racks, handy if you’re carrying a lot of stuff, and also offers extra legroom for comfort. Here’s a link to more bus information.

By train: Doncaster train station is the nearest to the airport, seven miles away. From there you can hook up with the national railway network to the rest of Britain. The AirLink Service 91 bus and various other local bus services run between the airport and Doncaster Rail Station every half an hour.

By car: If you’re using SatNav, the postcode DN9 3RH. You can access the airport from the M62, M1, A1 and M18. From the north or south, use the A1 or M18. From the west, approach via the M62. And if you’re travelling from the east, hop onto the M180.


Who flies from Doncaster Sheffield airport? It’s home to a broad range of household name tour operators and airlines. Wizz Air, the popular low cost flights operator, flies out of Doncaster-Sheffield, as do Ryanair and Flybe. If you’ve booked a package holiday with Airtours, Balkan Holidays, Bolsover Cruise Club or First Choice and you live in the area, you could find yourself flying from Doncaster-Sheffield. And Island Cruises, P&O Cruises, Thomas Cook, Thomson, Thomsonski and Transun also have a strong presence. Convenient or what!

Airport car parking

All the airport’s car parks are on site, close to the terminal. So there’s no waiting around for shuttle buses in all weathers when all you want to do is board your flight or get home! You don’t need to book, but pre-booking is usually cheaper. Parking is clearly signposted, and you can pay at any time using the paystation machines in the terminal, using all major credit and debit cards or cash.

Airport hotels

There’s a Ramada Encore hotel at the airport itself, within walking distance of the terminal, and a Best Western Premier just over a mile away. Otherwise there’s a good choice of local B&Bs, guest houses and hotels between three and five miles from the airport, many of which provide courtesy transfer services to and from the airport.
