America’s top holiday destination
When people talk about holidays in Florida they are often talking about holidays in Orlando which happens to be America’s top holiday destination. Orlando offers world-famous theme parks, amazing thrills and non-stop entertainment. But whilst holidays here feature an extraordinary unforgettable fantasy world of theme parks and attractions, many forget that Orlando sits in an astonishing region of green vegetation, lakes and rivers and offers the chance to visit both the Atlantic Space Coast and the fabulous white sandy beaches of the western Gulf Coast. The city of Orlando is just 14 miles from Orlando International airport, in the centre of the state of Florida, with Daytona Beach on the Space Coast to the east and Tampa on the Gulf Coast to the west.
Holidays in Orlando are incredibly popular with families and are a delight for children of all ages. Most people choose to holiday here for the two big names, Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort. Few visitors on holiday in Orlando see all there is to see at Disney alone, such is the scale of the attractions here. Disney in Florida now has four theme parks covering around 30000 acres and you can now choose from the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, MGM Studios and Animal Kingdom. If you have time you can also check out Seaworld Orlando and Wet `n Wild Orlando, but most holidays are simply not long enough to take full advantage of the other myriad attractions in the region which include Cirque du Soleil, Discovery Cove, Water Mania and Gatorland, not to mention tempting excursions to the amazing African theme park in Tampa and the Kennedy Space Centre just 46 miles away at Cape Canaveral! Orlando holidays need significant planning due to the sheer quantity of attractions on offer and the scale of the area.
Orlando offers visitors a vast selection of accommodation and entertainment either within the parks or in satellite areas like Kissimmee, International Drive or Lake Buena Vista. There is also an amazing selection of themed restaurants and dedicated nightlife parks like Pleasure Island and City Walk offering every imaginable variation on themed restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Orlando is very much a shopper’s paradise with stylish boutiques in Park Avenue and incredible malls like the Mercado Centre and Pointe Orlando. You will also find excellent golf courses (about 150 in fact!) along with spectator sports, artificial beaches and masses of watersports on the region’s lakes.
Although Orlando is land locked, its weather is influenced slightly by the Atlantic, as with the whole of Florida State, which gives it a fine year round climate and abundant sunshine that is very rarely oppressive. Rainfall is relatively low throughout the year and occurs on very few occasions, although some of these can often result in heavy downpours. Spring and early summer is settled, dry and fine with long spells of bright sunshine, while late summer and autumn weather can be changeable, with alternating dry and wet days that increase the likelihood of higher humidity. Winters are extremely sunny, benefiting from lovely warm temperatures that make Orlando such a popular destination during low season.
