Holidays in Benahavis – famous village close to Costa del Sol beaches
The whitewashed village of Benahavis holds a dizzying array of attractions. Not only is it set amidst the breathtaking mountain scenery of Sierrania de Ronda but it is a mere 15 minutes from the beach resorts of the Costa del Sol. Attractions including the top Spanish tourist destination of Ronda, the beaches of Marbella and a wealth of famous restaurants make Benahavis a truly diverse holiday location. Golf, watersports, horse riding and cycling can all be enjoyed on a Benahavis holiday as well as trips to vibrant cities such as Malaga and even Morocco.

Benahavis may be located inland but it is less than 15 minutes from the coast meaning long hot summers and mild winters. Summers are busy with day trippers who come to tour the villages but the weather can be very hot during the peak summer months. If you prefer warm rather than hot weather choose months such as April, May and October; the low season months will also bring significant holiday price reductions. Golf enthusiasts and nature lovers are well catered for here, and spring and autumn are two of the most beautiful seasons to visit Benahavis.
The stunning scenery in Benahavis is complemented by one of the best climates in Europe. This region of is blessed with daytime temperatures of 30C and over during the long hot summer months and the evenings will be a warm 18C. Rainfall is low for much of the year; non-existent during the summer tending only to appear from October to March. Spring and autumn are both fresh and warm seasons with average temperatures of 20C. Winter in Benahavis will still bring some sunshine and maximum temperatures of 15C are the norm although some rainfall is to be expected.
Holidays can be taken to Benahavis all year round but there are high and low seasons that mark out price differences. The summer months bring peak prices but if you book in advance you should be able to find good deals. Benahavis is served by Malaga Airport (AGP) with a quick transfer time of around 40 minutes. Direct flights to Malaga are available year round from most major UK city airports; flight time is approximately three hours. Malaga Airport provides restaurants, bars, duty free shopping and car hire facilities. Buses and taxis depart from Terminal 3; taxis are unmetered and fares should be arranged with drivers prior to departing.
Taxi fare from Malaga Airport to Benahavis will be approximately 85 euros (£68) per car. Independently booking a private transfer online will result in transfer fares of approximately 44 euros (£36) per person. Buses from Malaga bus station to Benahavis are regular at a cost of around 6 euros (£4). Independently booking car hire online is a convenient and low cost option; the main roads in Malaga are good with driving on the right.
Benahavis is located just 15 minutes from the best Costa del Sol beaches. This coastline is famous throughout Europe as having some of the most unspoilt and beautiful beaches along with one of the best climates in which to enjoy them. Many of the beaches have been awarded the European Blue Flag status for cleanliness, facilities and the stunning scenery. Family friendly beaches, secluded coves and lively resort beaches are all just a short drive from Benahavis.
Puerto Banus is perhaps one of the most famous Costa del Sol resorts and boasts beaches to suit all tastes. If you are looking for a family friendly beach with a relaxed atmosphere head to Levante Beach, which is the perfect place to grab a sun bed and take shade under one of the many palm trees. The waters are very shallow here and lifeguards are in attendance during the summer. The seafront has many beach bars and restaurants for a quick snack or cool drink.
Linda Vista, meaning ‘beautiful view’, is one of the best beaches in San Pedro de Alcantara for watersports enthusiasts. Jet skiing and windsurfing are available and the exceptionally clear waters are ideal for snorkelling. This is a very clean pale sand beach and does have facilities such as sun loungers, lifeguards and beach clubs.
For a spot of isolation on secluded beaches head to the Artola Cabopino sand dunes, which is a designated protected natural area. This immense stretch of sand is remote although only a short drive east of Marbella and right next door to Calahonda. This is the place to escape the crowds and simply relax in the peaceful atmosphere. There is little in the way of facilities to spoil the atmosphere and naturists do use this beach area.
There are plenty of beaches along this stretch of the Costa del Sol, about 7km away from the town, with golden sands, sun loungers and umbrellas to rent and convenient beach bars. There are water sports facilities for waterskiing and snorkelling, with boats available for fishing trips and scenic coastal cruises.
Benahavis has a charming Moorish town centre, full of cobbled streets and quaint white-washed homes, and lined with bars, restaurants, craft and antique shops. There are art galleries in which to browse, including one featuring work by the British sculptor David Marshall.
Known as 'The Dining Room of the Costa del Sol', Benahavis enjoys its first-class reputation as a gastronomic centre, with 20 restaurants and tapas bars offering an excellent standard of dining. Visitors in June can experience 'Gastronomic Day', where restaurants set up stalls in the village and offer samples.
A favourite spot with golfers, there are seven courses around the resort, giving players a chance to take advantage of the sunshine in Spain and the gorgeous scenery whilst enjoying a round. For even more choice, there are a total of 20 courses within a 15-minute drive.

The apartments and complexes are home to facilities such as swimming pools, tennis courts and fitness centres, and there are spa and beauty treatments available.
Walking and Hiking
Located in the mountains, Benahavis offers exceptional opportunities for walking and rambling, with varied terrain for both casual strolls and strenuous hikes through the valley and forest. As well as the stunning countryside to enjoy, there are hidden villages, churches and beauty spots to discover and a good choice of flora and fauna to view. The area is also popular with bird-watchers.

Benahavis is ideally placed to explore the Costa del Sol and all its sights, being close to both Puerta Banus, with its glamorous marina, and Marbella, home to stylish shopping and exciting nightlife. Other daytrips include the towns of Ronda, roman baths at Manilva, the nature reserve Las Angosturas, the zoo and a trip to a local bullfight. Further afield, Seville, Gibralta and even Morocco are possible day trips.
