Altura Holidays

Altura Holidays – Between historic and hectic, a delight in its own right

Altura was purpose-built as a beach resort, and because it sits between the historic town of Tavira and the high-life and handsome resort of Monte Gordo, it is perfectly placed for a wonderful family holiday or couples who love a beach with plenty of facilities, but also like to do a bit of exploring. If you are feeling particularly lucky, try a flutter at the casino in Monte Gordo, and close by are golf courses designed by Sevy Ballesteros, Sir Henry Cotton and Jack Nicklaus.

Altura’s coastline lies in the protected nature area, the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, a lagoon that is home to many bird species, so it’s popular with ‘twitchers’, bird watchers. The beaches are stunning, but for a mini-adventure, hire bikes and take a ride through the beautiful countryside. For city folk or history buffs, Tavira is one of the two most historic towns in the Algarve, still with its Roman bridge and some glorious mansions and townhouses. The catch of the day is landed at the fishing harbour of Altura, and makes its way rapidly to excellent local restaurants.

The eastern section of the Algarve has only fairly recently arrived on the tourism map, so is moderately underdeveloped in comparison to some other areas. Most of the accommodation in the resort is within a short walk of the beach. Lapped by the Mediterranean instead of the Atlantic further west, both sea and air temperatures are slightly higher than westward.
