Gokova holidays – Beaches, attractions and quiet nightlife

The attractive modern town of Gokova has a history dating back to the Ancient Greeks, so it has ancient roots. This small resort isn’t a typical tourist trap and it’s fairly quiet, so Gokova holidays are perfect if you love glorious weather but prefer to steer clear of the crazy party crowds.

It’s a peaceful place of beautiful woodland walks, lush forests and stunning mountains, just five minutes by car or a 25 minute walk from the glorious azure sea, Akcapinar and Gokce Beach. If you love kite surfing you’ll adore Gokova too – it’s famous for reliable winds and the lovely two mile wide bay is shallow and warm.  The village itself, Akyaka, is protected against over-development so you get a real taste of Turkey, free from high rise hotels and ugly sprawls.

It’s the perfect destination for couples and families who prefer adventure and relaxation in equal measure, with a scattering of good eateries and bars plus sea safaris by kayak and a selection of exciting day trips to enjoy. For lively clubbing holidays, head for Marmaris.

When to go to Gokova

Holidays to Gokova are most popular during the summer, but the weather either side of the peak season means it’s a great destination off-peak, when hotel and flights prices are lower and the resort is quieter. When it’s winter in the UK, it’s winter in Turkey too, although the climate means it’s almost always nicer than home!

In July and August in gets incredibly hot and it can be humid too, so if you prefer your weather less sticky, May, June, Late September and even October are probably your best bet. In winter it’s very quiet, although kitesurfers made a beeline for the resort all year round because of the brisk, cooling sea breezes, which are more or less constant.

The weather in Gokova

Take package holidays to Gokova in May for average daytime temperatures of 25C and warm nights averaging 13C. A month later in June, expect 31C during the day and 17C at night. July and August are the hottest months at 34C average with high humidity, modified by the resort’s famous sea breezes, and 20C after dark. It can get stormy in summer, with rainfall now and again, but it’s wonderfully warm rain, falling on average just 6 days per month.  The sea is at its warmest in August, averaging 24C, and you can expect 13-14 hours of glorious sunshine per day throughout July and August.

As you’d expect the best deals are usually available either side of the peak school holidays season, with cheaper flights and accommodation as well as a quieter vibe. Airport and transport need to know

Dalaman airport (DLM) is your destination and it’s a jewel in Turkey’s holiday industry crown, handling more than 10 million travellers a year with ease. From there it’s easy to reach the Turkish Riviera and if you’ve booked a package holiday, your transfers will probably be included. Dalaman airport is accessible direct from right across the UK, with flights from regional and major airports including a choice of London airports, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, Bournemouth and Cardiff.

It takes around an hour and a quarter to transfer to the resort, at a cost of about £27 return by shuttle bus and £250 per vehicle for a private taxi for 1-4 people. You can always pick up a Turkish yellow cab at the airport if you prefer, and it makes sense to set a price up front.  The local buses run from the bus station six miles from the airport. It’s a stunningly lovely drive if you fancy hiring a car at the airport, a great way to get your bearings and enjoy the unfolding landscapes and seascapes. You’ll need to drive on the right, and watch out for typically fast-driving locals!
