Bodrum Region Things to do
Water Sports
Water sports are almost a national pastime in Turkey and the choice in Bodrum is excellent. The Turkish coast is famous for boating, sailing and yachting so whether you are an experienced deck hand or want to sit back and cruise past the ancient Aegean shoreline a trip can be arranged. The traditional wooden gulet is worthwhile considering as an alternative to a modern yacht and trips to the islands of Kos and Rhodes can be easily organised. Other water sports offered in the Bodrum region are water skiing, jet skiing, snorkelling, scuba diving and wind surfing, which is of excellent quality due to the warm Mediterranean air and clear waters.
Beaches
With world class water sports it is almost a prerequisite that there is a golden sand beach to relax on afterwards and the Bodrum region of Turkey is not short here either. Beaches stretch for miles in either direction along the coast and many have a blue flag so you always know the water is clean and safe for the kids. Although there are many to choose from, including hidden away gems, some of the well-known beaches are Gumusluk, Turgetreis, Akyarlar and Karaincir.
Sites
Steeped in ancient history, the Bodrum region is home to some fascinating sites and ancient ruins, including the site of King Mausolous' Tomb, Bodrum Castle, the Amphitheatre, and the underwater city of Mindos. Visit the famous Turtle Beach at Dalyan, and experience the cleansing mud baths, or travel further afield to see the ancient city of Ephesus or the calcified rocks at Pummukale.
Activities
The Bodrum region is not an exclusive paradise for water sports so there is plenty of opportunity for the land lubber in you to have a game of tennis or golf. Within a short car drive you can hire horses and ride across the scenic countryside and in the cooler months hiking is recommended.
Nightlife & Shopping
The town of Bodrum has grown up with tourists in mind, moving from smaller fishing villages to a town with all the amenities you would expect from a world class tourist destination. During the summer season peak it can become quite busy but rarely crowded. In the evening the clubs, bars and restaurants come to life with choice being at the heart of the matter. If you are looking for a quieter night out then the Bodrum peninsular has a more traditional pace of life and far fewer clubs.
