The water sports in Turkey are known to be some of the best in Europe and in particular on the Mediterranean in large part due to the warm breeze coming across the Mediterranean as well as clean, clear, warm waters. For shopping you can choose between chic western shops in town for the bizarre which sells traditional handicrafts including leather, pottery, silverware, carpets and rugs.
Traditional Villages & Meze
The Bodrum peninsular is a quieter option to the main town and there are a number of traditional villages dotted along it. A day trip to these or some of the small towns towards Turkey's interior will enrich a beach holiday with some culture as you see how life used to be before tourism came to Turkey. No holiday in Turkey is complete without trying Meze, likely the most traditional of all meals, and the smaller towns or traditional tavernas deliver outstanding quality at a reasonable price.
Ancient Sites
You could easily spend a week visiting the region’s historic sites. Bodrum boasts medieval Bodrum Castle with its fine museum of underwater archaeology, and the beautifully restored amphitheatre, which still hosts live entertainment, particularly in Bodrum festival in September. Worthwhile Bodrum excursions include the ancient city of Priene, the wonderful theatre of Miletus, the Temple of Apollo at Didyma, and the ancient city of Ephesus.
