Summer is well on the way in June, and being before the start of the school holidays, this month can be ideal for a relaxing and laid-back getaway. The Mediterranean resorts are well and truly open for business, however it’s still not peak season, so prices and availability remain good, and there are generally late specials and deals up for grabs.
Southern Europe is blessed with hours of sunshine each day, with Greece, Turkey and Cyprus being ideal choices for a beach escape. June is the perfect time to visit some of the more popular Greek islands before they get too crowded – with Mykonos, famed for its stylish nightlife, and Santorini, home to dazzling views and a dramatic volcanic landscape being two of the most sought-after destinations.
The Amalfi Coast is well-worth a visit in June, with Sorrento, Positano and the island of Capri seeing picture-perfect towns full of the glamorous ‘dolce vita’ that Italy is famous for. Croatia, and the Dalmation Coast offer a quiet and decidedly unspoilt side of the Mediterranean, whilst the islands of Sardinia and Corsica display a unique and rather upmarket charm. You could try the Costa de la Luz or Costa Almeria to see a different side to Southern Spain, or travel up the Costa Verde in Portugal.
Spain and Greece see plenty of repeat visitors each year as they offer so much choice, especially the beloved Costa del Sol and Majorca, both established favourites with British visitors, as well as the Greek Islands of Corfu and Crete. Turkey, Tenerife and Malta all still offer plenty of affordable package deals in June, with self-catering apartments and studios being the best option for budget travellers, and bargains generally available this month.
Long-haul destinations to consider in June include Bali, Fiji and Bora Bora, which boast idyllic tropical settings for weddings or honeymoons. Hawaii and Bermuda remain hot and dry, whilst Zanzibar and Namibia offer somewhere totally different this month. The USA offers something for everyone from coast to coast, with California, New York and Miami all hotspots for combining sunbathing, sightseeing and shopping.
Thanks to high temperatures and a lack of humidity, you can enjoy comfortable horse riding through the Spanish countryside, boating on the Italian Lakes, and nature walks on the islands of Madeira and Corsica this month. La Manga and the Algarve offer excellent sporting facilities, whilst Cape Verde, Fuerteventura and Maui are known for their first-class windsurfing spots. Turkey boasts relaxing gulet cruises, however, if you can’t commit to just one region, sailing holidays around the Med define the ultimate in luxury.
This month is a great time to venture out and visit somewhere new, as the long sunny days can ensure plenty of time for exploring. You could embark on a historic tour of Brussels or Bruges, try Bordeaux or Oporto for wine tasting, or linger over tapas in Seville or Santiago de Compostela.
