Lake Lugano Holidays
Excellent views across the lake
If you are considering a holiday in Lugano there are some excellent views to be had. Sitting on a bay on Lake Lugano, the town is surrounded by mountains. Lugano town is beautiful, too, with Italianate Lombardy buildings, museums and a range of visitor events for anyone on a Swiss lakes and mountains holiday to enjoy. Lugano has a mild climate and a town centre built around Mediterranean-style piazzas. Subtropical parks on the lake shore invite further investigation on a sunny day. On your Swiss lakes and mountains holiday, visit Lugano's local mountains, Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè, for a great view of the town.
Holidays at Lake Lugano – Art and architecture
Lugano holidays are perfect for anyone who loves art or architecture. There's a good quality to the city's art exhibitions and the local art museum features works by Renoir, Degas, Klee and Jawlensky. The last half century or so has also seen this region of Swiss lakes and mountains become renowned for architecture, with a movement known as the Ticino School, whose most famous exponents are Luigi Snozzi and Mario Botta, and whose work peppers the town.
Lake Lugano Holidays – Out and about
On your holidays in Lugano, make sure you take the ten-minute funicular railway to the top of Monte San Salvatore, or walk it in two hours. Another must-see is the Campione d'Italia, an Italian commune cut off from Italy by the lakes and mountains in Switzerland. In Campione, you'll find important festivals of literature and cinema, and the Civic Gallery, plus some lovely churches, which are all worth a look. Other trips worth doing include the fishing village of Gandria and the ‘Switzerland in Miniature’ museum at Melide. For a little self-indulgence, take a guided tour of the Alprose Chocolate Factory on your Lugano holidays.
Lake Lugano weather
There's a mild Mediterranean climate around Lugano, with temperatures rarely reaching extremes, although the mercury can be expected to top out in the high 20s in July. Make sure you take sunscreen and rain gear, too, because this is Swiss lakes and mountains country, and the weather is notoriously changeable. In the winter, temperatures fall into single figures, although they rarely reach freezing point. A good time to visit and walk the local mountains, Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè, is spring or autumn, when you're assured of gentle temperatures in the high teens or low 20s.
Lake Lugano all-inclusive
If you are looking for all inclusive holidays in Lugano in the style of Spain or the Algarve, you are likely to be disappointed. This sophisticated city is known for its chic hotels offering quality holidays in a stylish lakeside setting. You are very unlikely to find Lugano all-inclusive holidays offering entertainment and limitless drinks. Very few hotels in Switzerland offer this kind of all-inclusive holiday. Most Lugano holidays from the UK are offered on a bed & breakfast or half-board basis. Lugano self-catering holidays are also popular in what can be quite a pricey resort. Finding cheap holidays in Lugano is something of a challenge given the upmarket nature of the resort, but it is possible to find reasonably cheap holidays in Lugano bed & breakfast hotels in the 1 and 2 star categories.
