Sitges Holidays – Time for a change?

If a ‘traditional’ package holiday in the country is simply not for you, and you want to spend a week or two in a cosmopolitan resort popular with trendsetters, arty types, and the region’s gay community, this is a bohemian holiday location that will tick all your boxes.

Singles, couples, families and groups can all enjoy package holidays to Sitges, which is set on a headland in Catalonia: a fascinating and dramatically scenic, autonomous region. The resort can boast a number of beautiful bays. Even better, it is only an hour’s drive from Barcelona, with its art galleries, museums, theatres, fine dining and amazing shopping.

When to go to Sitges

Although Catalonia cannot claim to enjoy the wealth of blistering sunshine that coastal towns in the country’s south can boast, the climate there can still be described as seasonal, Mediterranean - this means warm summers and mild winters are what you can expect. August is the peak month for visitors from abroad and from inland Spanish cities.

As well as its bays, the resort has a 5km stretch of shoreline. This means that even at the height of summer (August) you’ll find room enough to spread out on the fine golden sand. If you prefer a more comfortable temperature, head out to the resort in the spring or autumn. It is quieter then, and not as hot, which makes exploring the region on foot a joy.

The weather in Sitges

Leisurely evening walks along the pretty, palm-lined promenade at the resort can be a delight, as the average night-time summer temperature there is 18°C. During the day throughout the summer (early June to mid-September) 10 hours of glorious sunshine daily is what you can expect, and little or no rain. The average daytime temperature is 26°C (28°C in August).

At the resort in Spain the wonderfully warm summers are always followed by mild winters. Winter daytime temperatures average out at 15°C (8°C at night). Evenings spent at any one of the little tapas bars or seafront restaurants can be enchanting, and it will still be warm enough to ‘go alfresco’ in the afternoon.

Getting the best deal to Sitges

The great thing about Tarragona Province is that holidays can be enjoyed there at any time of year. At your chosen resort there, the height of summer is when it is busiest. That is also the time when flights and holiday packages are dearest.

So, why not opt for an off-peak holiday there this year? Flying out to Catalonia in May or October will give you a wider choice of hotels. You may even find there are discounts on rooms and meals on offer during those months.

To push down the cost of your holiday further still, think about planning your one or two-week break at the resort for the weeks outside of the UK school holidays (during the off-peak season). That is definitely when the very best bargains are to be had, so it is well-worth considering.

Airport and transport need to know

Flights from the UK to Catalonia leave regularly from several UK airports. Fly out from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Newcastle, Manchester, Bristol, Aberdeen or Belfast to either Reus Airport (REU) or Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN). From London, it’s a two-hour flight. Both airports are modern, but Barcelona is the larger of the two.

Reus Airport has a café, restaurant and duty free. From there, you’re best bet when it comes to airport transfer is to take the bus, as it is a 45-minute taxi journey and so quite expensive.  There are no direct coaches from Reus Airport to Sitges. Take a coach to Barcelona and then the bus to Sitges.

Many travellers prefer to fly out from the UK to Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN), simply because it is bigger and can offer more facilities, shops and cafes. If that’s you, be prepared for a 30-minute drive to the resort once you’ve touched down in Catalonia. Finding a taxi or hiring a car won’t be a problem.

The best beaches in Sitges

Holidays to Sitges are not your usual holiday fayre; the resort is too bohemian for that. But heading for the beach on any Mediterranean holiday could almost be described as a ‘natural human reflex’, couldn’t it! So, let’s explore the resort’s beaches now, and see how families, solo sun-worshippers, and adrenaline junkies are all catered for.

Sitges has 17 beaches – clean, sandy beaches along a golden shoreline that stretches for as far as the eye can see. The beaches are varied too, which means there’s something for everyone. The best family beach is Platja de la Fragata. There is a gay beach (Platja de la Rodona) and secluded nudist beaches (Platja d'Aiguadolç and Platja dels Balmains).

Mums and dads will be pleased to learn that the resort’s beaches are safe and environmentally-managed. Nine of them have been awarded the much-coveted Blue Flag from the European Union. This means the sand, water and beach facilities are simply first-class (toilets and showers come as standard). Most beaches also have disabled access.

Sun lounger hire firms operate along the resort’s coastline. But, because the beaches are basically rock and pebble-free, you might be just as comfortable stretching out your beach towel on the sand and then soaking up the sun, without having to pay any sun lounger fees. That will release more funds for ice creams, which are easily purchased there!

If you are determined to get holiday-active during your one or two-week break at the resort, your only problem will be deciding which water sport to try your hand at. There’s a massive choice. Jet-skiing, water-skiing, water motor biking, surfing, scuba diving, windsurfing, boating… Which will you opt for? Or why not opt for them all?

These cannot always be found at the resort’s beaches themselves (it is far too arty a milieu for that!), but you’ll find all the aforementioned water sports at nearby Vilanova town and at La Pineda.  For a few hours’ peace and quiet, the best of the secluded coves is at Platja de les Anquines – the western-most beach at the resort.
