Holidays in Nerja – The prettiest Costa del Sol resort

Nerja is located in eastern Costa del Sol and this little resort has grown in popularity thanks to its many beautiful beaches and traditional Spanish atmosphere. The white washed houses and winding streets are typical of Andalucia, and Nerja is one of the prettiest towns, proving very popular with couples and families. There is a diversity of beaches here whether you are looking for a busy beach with plenty of activities or a more secluded unspoilt beach. Excursions can be taken to exciting cities such as Granada and Marbella and the ancient caves at Nerja are the third most popular tourist attraction in Spain.

Nerja has grown over the years and is now home to an amazing number of restaurants serving traditional and international cuisine. But the beaches in Nerja will always be the highlight and are the reason that the population of 19,000 triples during the hot summer months.

When to go

Summers in Nerja are ideal if you are looking for high temperatures and busy beaches and the resort does have a lively atmosphere during the peak season. Spring and autumn are the seasons for warm rather than hot weather and a more relaxed atmosphere with uncrowded beaches. The low seasons are the best time to pick up excellent discounts on flights and accommodation and temperatures are still high; it’s not uncommon to find temperatures of 30C during October. Winters in Nerja are also sunny but excluding the busy Christmas holidays the resort will be quieter and makes for a relaxing winter sunshine break.

The weather in Nerja

Nerja has one of the best climates in Spain and is sunny and dry for much of the year. You can expect 30C daytime temperatures during July and August with warm 21C summer evenings. Rain will not usually disturb a summer holiday and rainfall tends to occur infrequently from November to March. Swimming is available all year round and many people favour the spring and autumn months when the weather is comfortably warm. Winter in Nerja will be mild with temperatures of 16C during December meaning it is still possible to pick up a tan during the sunny winter months.

Airport and Transport need to know

Nerja is served by Malaga Airport (AGP) and direct flights from the UK leave from most major city airports. Granada Airport (GRX) is becoming another convenient option although flights may not be as frequent from the UK. Flight time to Malaga will be approximately three hours and transfer to Nerja will be around 50 minutes. Malaga Airport provides facilities including duty free shopping, restaurants, bars, car hire and airport hotels. Buses, trains and taxis leave from Terminal 3; taxis are unmetered and the fare should be arranged with the driver.

Taxi fares from the airport to Nerja will be approximately 80 euros (£64) per car but you can independently book a private shuttle bus online before arriving with a fare of 27 euros (£21) per person. Self-drive is an alternative and cars can be booked independently online; the main roads are in excellent condition and driving is on the right.

The best beaches in Nerja

Costa del Sol is famous as having some of the most unspoilt and beautiful beaches in the world. Immense stretches of clean grey sand are typical of this region but there are also many golden and white sand beaches. The Mediterranean Sea waters are crystal clear; ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving. Many of the beaches here have been awarded the European Blue Flag status and lifeguards will be in attendance on the busy beaches for additional safety.

Playa Calahonda beach is located in a cove just left of the Balcon de Europa viewing point. This beach is popular thanks to the stunning views and central location but still retains a laid back atmosphere. This is one of the best beaches to relax on sun loungers under the shade of a parasol or swim in the shallow sea waters and watch the fishermen who still use this beach to launch their boats.

Playa Burriana is the biggest and most popular beach in Nerja. If you are looking for watersports such as water skiing, canoeing and scuba diving then this is the place to be. Sun loungers are also available and nearby facilities include beach bars, restaurants and cafés. This beach does become very busy during the summer so get there early to find a space on this Blue Flag beach.

For a more secluded beach follow the locals to El Canuelo located at the foot of the Marco Cliffs. This stunning string of sandy coves is located eight miles east of Nerja within a nature reserve and is rarely busy even during the summer months. From the cliff top you can board a little bus that will take you down to the coves but take some refreshments as there is little in the way of services on these isolated beaches.
