Holidays in Mijas – Peaceful resort 30 minutes from Marbella
With its white washed little villages and tranquil atmosphere, Mijas is known as a more relaxed resort area on the Costa del Sol. A mountainous backdrop and views of the shimmering Mediterranean Sea make this is a romantic and peaceful location that is perfect for families and couples. But the resorts are definitely modern with many private villas, apartments and hotels with swimming pools as well as numerous beautiful beaches to explore. Activities can include watersports such as scuba diving and sailing and golf enthusiasts can play all year round thanks to the sunny climate and a choice of nine golf courses.
Holidays in Mijas do focus on the traditional Spain with its bustling markets, atmospheric tavernas and summer festivals featuring classical music and flamenco dancing. But a lively night can easily be had by taking a short drive to the nightlife hotspots such as Marbella, Puerto Banus or Torremolinos.
When to go
Mijas is a quieter resort than the nearby beach resorts such as Puerto Banus but is still popular during the summer months when it will be very hot. The peak summer months will bring the highest holiday prices and booking in advance to obtain the best deals is advised. Spring and autumn are warm rather than hot and this is a comfortable time to enjoy golf, cycling and walking, and it’s also the best time to find discounts on flights and accommodation. Winters can occasionally be chilly but the warm weather usually wins out; this low season will be ideal for sunshine at reduced prices.
The weather in Mijas

Rainfall is very rare during the summer and tends to appear infrequently from November through March. The spring and autumn seasons are warm with temperatures of just under 20C during April and over 20C during October. The best beaches in Mijas
One of the benefits of a Mijas holiday is the close proximity to a diversity of amazing beaches. The Mijas coastline stretches for 12km and the numerous small coves and the sandy bay at La Cala feature fine grey sand, crystal clear waters and are the perfect places to spend sunny days. The busy resort beaches of Marbella and Puerto Banus are 30 minutes to the West while Torremolinos is a quick 10 minute drive to the East.
La Cala is one of those beautiful Costa de Sol beaches that exudes an atmosphere of relaxation and tranquillity. This Blue Flag awarded beach provides sun loungers and parasols, changing facilities and showers. There is a promenade near the beach with beach bars, restaurants and cafeterias. The shallow waters are ideal for small children to play in and watersports are available at La Cala during the busy summer months.
If you are looking to enjoy a vibrant busy beach then take a ten minute drive to Bajondillo Beach in Torremolinos. This is one of the most popular beaches in the area and features an abundance of watersports including jet skiing, parasailing and water skiing. The nearby promenade features bustling bars and restaurants. This beach does become packed during the summer months so get there early to ensure a space.
There are many secluded coves and bays in Mijas but to experience one of Malaga’s hidden beaches take a 10 minute drive to Arroyo Hondo Beach at Benalmadena. This beautiful stretch of sand is almost deserted during the low season and is quiet even during the height of summer. There are umbrellas and hammocks for hire but there is little in the way of beachside facilities and makes for a blissful retreat from the crowds.
