Holidays in Frigiliana – the prettiest village in Andalucia
It’s not difficult to see why the Spanish Tourist Office has officially named Frigiliana the prettiest village in Andalucia. This beautiful hillside village is much loved by couples looking for a romantic location full of winding little streets and intimate restaurants but with easy access to the beaches in Spain. The sunny climate and friendly village atmosphere makes for a more relaxed Spanish holiday with days spent on the beaches or cycling and horse riding through the stunning Sierra de Almijara. Frigiliana is a holiday of wine tasting tours, flamenco music and dance and sightseeing exciting cities such as Granada, Malaga and Marbella.
Frigiliana combines traditional village life with the secluded bays at nearby Nerja and the livelier beaches and nightlife options of resorts such as Puerto Banus, Fuengirola and Motril. Golf, watersports, theme parks and even day trips to Morocco in North Africa can all be included on a Frigiliana holiday.
When to go to Frigiliana
Frigiliana is a warm weather destination for much of the year and the climate is conducive to outdoor activities such as walking, swimming and golfing. The high season months do bring higher prices and the summer months are very popular with day trippers visiting the village. The end of August is also a busy time with four days of concerts and markets during the Frigiliana cultural festival. Spring and autumn are warm, fresh and slightly quieter than the summer months; these seasons are the best time to benefit from reduced rates on accommodation and flights.

The climate in Frigiliana is typically hot and dry during the summer with warm spring and autumn seasons and mild winters. Daytime temperatures during the summer months can soar over 30C while the evenings will be a pleasantly warm 20C. Rainfall will rarely disturb a summer holiday and Frigiliana is dry for much of the year; rainfall will usually occur during the still sunny winter months. Frigiliana is particularly beautiful during the spring and autumn with average 20C temperatures and very little rainfall.

Airport and transport need to know
Malaga Airport (AGP) is the most convenient and popular airport when arriving in the Costa del Sol. There are direct flights all year round to Malaga from most UK city airports with a flight time of approximately three hours. Malaga Airport is fully equipped with facilities including restaurants, bars, duty free shopping, currency exchange and car hire. Trains, buses and taxis depart from Terminal 3 but taxi prices should be agreed with the driver before departing.
Transfer time to Frigiliana will be approximately one hour with a fare of 70 euros (£56) per journey. A bus can be taken from Malaga bus station to Nerja with another bus to Frigiliana; the fare will be approximately four euros (£3). Independently booking car hire online is a popular and economical option and prices start at around 90 euros (£72) per week. The main roads in Malaga are in excellent condition with driving on the right.
The best beaches in Frigiliana
The beauty of holidays in Frigiliana is that you are located a mere five kilometres from the beaches of the Costa del Sol. These beautiful beaches are famed for their unspoilt nature, clean sea waters and stunning scenery. There are many grey, golden and even white sand beaches along this coastline. You will soon be able to find your favourite beach whether it’s an isolated little bay or one of the livelier and larger resort beaches.
Nerja is home to some very lively beaches but if you are looking for somewhere to escape the crowds try the hidden coves at the Marco Cliffs. El Canuelo is one of the largest of these coves and is off the beaten track enough that it never becomes busy. El Canuelo is located within a protected nature reserve and is the ideal spot to simply relax on the beach, swim in the warm waters and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
Motril is located just 20 minutes from Frigiliana and is home to some amazing beaches including the popular Playa Poniente. This large lively beach is family friendly and the ideal place to hire a sun lounger and parasol or have a bite to eat and drink at one of the many beachfront restaurants and bars. The promenade does become lively in the evening and you may wish to stay later and enjoy the nightlife.
There are many beaches in Nerja where scuba diving, sailing, jet skiing and wind surfing can be enjoyed. One of the best beaches for watersports is the Blue Flag awarded Playa Burriana from which you can also enjoy cruises along the coast. This popular beach does get very busy during the summer thanks to the number of restaurants, cafes and bars along the seafront.
