Holidays in El Gastor – Beautiful mountain village and breath-taking scenery

If you are looking for a romantic holiday getaway or a family holiday with plenty of activities then we may have found just the spot. The picturesque mountain village of El Gastor is known as the balcony of the white villages due to the breath-taking views from its elevated position. This is the heart of Andalucia and features three national parks and the beautiful lakes of the Zahara de la Sierra. The city of Ronda, one of Spain’s top tourist attractions, is a mere 20 minutes from El Gastor and this historic city should be seen at least once. El Gastor holidays also provide easy access to the vibrant beach resorts of the Costa del Sol, and can include trips to Marbella, Gibraltar and Seville.

 

When to go

Hot weather lovers will no doubt prefer the summer months when the temperature in El Gastor does hit 30C but this will be the most expensive time to visit. Summers are busy with day trippers from the coast; festivals are held in El Gastor every month from June through October. El Gastor is an ideal location for sports activities such as golf, walking and cycling and many people prefer the cooler, quieter spring and autumn seasons. The low season months are still warm and spring, autumn and winter are the best times to pick up reduced rates on flights and accommodation.

 

The weather in El Gastor

The climate in El Gastor is predominantly hot and dry for much of the year and even the mild winters bring of 13C. Daytime temperatures during July and August will hit 30C and over while the warm evenings bring temperatures of 17C; perfect for alfresco dinners. Rainfall is rare during the summer and will generally appear from November through March. Spring and autumn are warm with average temperatures of 20C although higher temperatures are not uncommon.

 

Getting the best deal

Some excellent holiday savings can be made if you choose to visit El Gastor during the low season months. This will include spring, autumn and winter but avoiding the busy school holiday periods such as Easter, October and Christmas. The low seasons are the quieter periods when airlines and accommodation offer discounted rates. Airport and transport need to know

Malaga Airport (AGP) is the most popular and convenient airport for Costa del Sol destinations, and flights to Malaga depart from most UK city airports all year round. Flight time to Malaga will be approximately three hours with a two hour transfer time to El Gastor. Malaga Airport provides modern facilities including bars, restaurants, currency exchange, duty free shopping and car hire. Trains, buses and unmetered taxis depart from Terminal 3; a taxi to El Gastor will be approximately 120 euros (£95) per car.

 

Independently booking a private transfer car online is a popular option and fares will be around 75 euros (£60) per person. Car hire is one of the most convenient and economical options; cars can be booked independently online with prices starting at around 90 euros (£71) per week. The main roads in Costa del Sol are in excellent condition with driving on the right.

 

The best beaches in El Gastor

In little over an hour’s drive from El Gastor you can be enjoying the stunning Costa del Sol or Costa de la Luz beaches. Andalucia is home to some of the most unspoilt beaches in Spain featuring fine grey, golden and white sand beaches lapped by the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Lively Blue Flag awarded resort beaches and secluded little beaches are all within easy reach of El Gastor.

 

The beaches of Marbella are certainly the most popular destination on the coast but make sure to visit Puerto Banus before reaching Marbella. This resort features an amazing variety of beaches and one of the liveliest is Mistral Beach. This is the ideal beach for young families due to the shallow waters and beachside facilities such as sun lounger hire and restaurants. Watersports such as jet skiing, boating and banana boat riding are also provided at Mistral Beach.

 

San Pedro will be the first resort to greet you when driving from El Gastor and this coastline is filled with busy beaches and isolated coves. If you take a short drive west you will come to the secluded beaches of Estepona, and El Saladillo is one of the best beaches to escape the crowds. This beach is rarely busy and with one beach restaurant providing delicious seafood you can spend an entire day here and then enjoy the magnificent sunset.

 

Costa de la Luz provides great beaches for watersports and if you want to sample some of the most famous windsurfing beaches in the world head to Tarifa. Tarifa is the most southerly point in Europe and features many white sand beaches. It’s also known as a surfer’s paradise and beaches such as Playa los Lances are ideal if you are a surfing beginner looking to get your feet wet.
