Holidays in Capileira – Lively village in the Alpujarras

The beautiful Moorish village of Capileira is set amidst the most stunning mountain scenery in Andalucia and is also the highest and most visited village in the Alpujarras. The dramatic Poquiera gorge and the Sierra Nevada mountains are begging to be explored and this area is perfect for horse riding, mountain biking and trekking. The whitewashed winding village streets are home to tapas bars and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious local food and drink. You can take a trip to nearby Lanjaron to enjoy a spa treatment, try wine tasting at the many Alpujarras wine cellars or go skiing in Sierra Nevada during a winter holiday.

 

If you can tear yourself away from the delights of Capileira you can visit vibrant cities such as Malaga and Granada, and of course the fabulous beach resorts are less than hour away. When to go

Choose holidays in Capileira during the spring and autumn months if you prefer warm rather than hot weather. These seasons bring comfortably warm weather if you enjoy sports such as cycling, golf and mountain biking. You can also pick up some great reductions on flights and accommodation during both of these seasons and Capileira will not be as busy with tourists. Summers will be hot but are a great time to swim in the lakes and hit the beaches as well as enjoying the busy nightlife atmosphere down at the coastal resorts.

 

The weather in Capileira

You can expect some scorching weather during the long hot summer months and the daytime temperature will head up to and over 30C during July and August. Summer evenings will be warm at around 17C and rainfall will be very rare during the summer. The warm spring and autumn months will bring warm temperatures of around 20C but don’t be surprised to find temperatures of 30C during May and October. Winters will be colder although still sunny with snow on the mountains; this is the time for skiing in the Sierra Nevada.

 

Getting the best deal

The peak summer months and the busy school holiday periods such as Easter and the October break do bring higher holiday prices, but excellent savings can be made by booking in advance. The low seasons months during spring and autumn are quieter and flights to Malaga and accommodation in Capileira will be offered at reduced prices. Airport and transport need to know

Direct flights from the UK to Malaga Airport (AGP) are frequent and available from most city airports all year round. Flight time to Malaga is approximately three hours and transfer time to Capileira will be just over two hours. Malaga Airport provides duty free shopping, restaurants, bars, currency exchange and car hire facilities. Trains, buses and taxis depart from Terminal 3 but taxis are unmetered and prices should be arranged with the driver.

 

Independently booking a private transfer car online is an option with a fare of approximately 107 euros (£86) per person. Trains and buses do run from Malaga to Granada and then buses can be taken to Capileira. Independently booking a rental car online is one of the most popular and inexpensive options at around 90 euros (£72) per week. The main roads are in good condition and driving is on the right hand side.

 

The best beaches in Capileira

It takes just a short 40 minute drive from Capileira to arrive at the beautiful beach resorts of Costa de Almeria and Costa del Sol. These stunning beaches are famed as the some of the best beaches in Spain thanks to their cleanliness and unspoilt nature. Lively European Blue Flag beaches and secluded little coves and bays feature all along the coastline. The warm Mediterranean Sea waters are perfect for swimming and watersports, and the spectacular sunsets will be a holiday highlight.

 

Almunecar is home to around 25 beautiful beaches and many secluded little coves. Playa Pozuela is a beautiful family friendly little beach where you can rent sun loungers and have a bite to eat at Iguana Playa beachside restaurant. The sea waters are shallow and perfectly safe for children to play; an ideal spot for beach picnics and lazy days in the sun.

 

For a more secluded beach make your way to El Canuelo, known as one of the best beaches in the Costa del Sol. This string of coves just outside of Nerja is well hidden and frequented by the locals. The beautiful bays are located at the foot of the Marco Cliffs and a bus will take you down to the beach. There is nothing much in the way of facilities so take provisions and simply enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.

 

Motril is the largest and liveliest town on the Costa Tropical and features two main beaches, the biggest of which is Playa Poniente. This is the ideal beach for watersports such as jet skiing, scuba diving and sailing, and for golf lovers a course is located near the beach. The beachfront promenade is home to many bars, cafeterias and restaurants and you may be enticed to stay later and enjoy the lively nightlife.
