Holidays in Algeciras – an exotic city with beautiful beaches

Algeciras may be set in sun drenched Costa del Sol but it offers an altogether more exotic holiday experience than most Spanish beach resorts. Located on the western coast only 12Km from Gibraltar this sizeable port city sits on the stunning Algeciras Bay; the port is the busiest in Spain and is the gateway to North Africa.

Families and couples of all ages go on holiday here to soak up the traditional Spanish and Arabic atmosphere in the old town markets, restaurants and tavernas, and to enjoy the golden beaches and seafront promenades. There are plenty of sports available including golf in Tarifa and watersports such as scuba diving, jet skiing and sailing.

If you love to explore you can take a quick ferry trip to Gibraltar or to North Africa to visit exotic Tangiers in Morocco. Once the sun goes down the nightlife in Algeciras holds something for everyone with nightclubs, bars and romantic little restaurants.

When to go to Algeciras

Algeciras is a sunshine destination all year round but if you are a hot weather lover then the peak summer months will be the best option. These low season periods are also the best time to benefit from the reduced rates offered by hotels and airlines. Winter sunshine holidays in Algeciras are an option. You can play golf all year round here, and this is another good time to pick up lower priced holidays.

The best beaches in Algeciras

The Costa del Sol is famed for its immense, unspoilt beaches that are lapped by the exceptionally clear Mediterranean Sea and the golden sand beaches at Algeciras are no exception. The warm waters here are a mix of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean and swimming is available for much of the year thanks to the sunny climate. Whether you are looking for family friendly beaches with plenty of activities or secluded little coves you will not be disappointed with these stunning beaches.

Playa Getares is regarded as one of the best beaches in Algeciras. The golden sands stretch for over a mile and shelve gently into the placid waters making it a popular beach for families with young children. During the summer months the beach plays host to a children’s fair and a market while restaurants and cafeterias are located along the seafront. Paddling boats are available as well as sun loungers and parasols under which to take shade from the hot sunshine.

For an isolated, untouched beach, head to Playa Rinconcillo, which is actually two individual beaches. The stretch of almost white sand beach next to the River Palomes is sheltered by marshes and the perfect place to escape the crowds. The waters here are deeper than those found at the adjoining busy beach area but if it is peace and quiet you desire then this is the place to come.

Watersports enthusiasts should make the 15 minute drive to Playa Arte Vida to see why the beaches in Tarifa have become world famous as a surfing destination. Kite and wind surfing are the most popular sports here, especially from October to May. Jet skiing and water skiing are also popular and the stunning beaches of Tarifa should be experienced at least once if you are visiting Algeciras.
