Situated on the Atlantic Coast in sun drenched Costa de la Luz, this picturesque Spanish fishing village is where the celebrities rent beach houses to escape the crowds. Although small, the village provides plenty of atmospheric little bars and restaurants and you are only 30 minutes from the vibrant nightlife of Tarifa.

The summer months are without doubt the most popular period to visit thanks to the high temperatures although Zahara de los Atunes is warm for much of the year. The spring and autumn seasons are warm with temperatures of around 20C while the winters are short and mild with 16C temperatures and some rainfall.

Airport and transport need to know

Zahara de los Atunes is served by a number of airports with the closest being Jerez (XRY) and Gibraltar (GIB) with an approximate transfer of 1hr 20 minutes. Flights to these airports from the UK may be limited to major cities such as London. Malaga Airport (AGP) does have more frequent flights from most UK city airports all year round and the transfer time to Zahara de los Atunes will be 2hrs and 30 minutes. Trains, buses and unmetered taxis depart from Malaga Airport Terminal 3; taxis are unmetered and fares should be agreed with the driver.

 

Car hire is one of the most convenient and economical ways to make the transfer to Zahara de los Atunes. The main roads are in good condition with driving on the right hand side. Car hire can be booked independently online with rental prices of approximately 90 euros (£72) per week.

 

The best beaches in Zahara de los Atunes

Costa de la Luz is home to some spectacular beaches featuring white and golden sands and the warm clean waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The beaches along this coastline are more undeveloped and untouched than those found anywhere else in Spain; it’s very easy to find secluded bays and huge deserted beaches. Many of the lively resort beaches have been awarded the European Blue Flag for cleanliness and safety facilities such as lifeguards. With some many beaches within close proximity you can choose a different beach every day to suit your mood.

 

Zahara de los Atunes Beach is one of the most popular in the Cadiz province and stretches for almost 8km. The unspoilt golden sands make up one of the six beaches in this area and the shallow waters here are ideal for families with small children. There are sunbeds available on the beach and if you are looking for spectacular sunsets this is the place to come as evening draws in.

 

For an idyllic beach on which to simply relax and escape the crowds head to the stunning white sands of Playa Arroyo del Canuelo. Located just outside the village this is one of those hidden beaches featuring crystal clear waters and a backdrop of pine trees. There are no facilities at this beach and naturism is permitted.

 

There are plenty of great beaches near Zahara de Los Atunes where you can practice watersports but a trip to the beaches of Tarifa should be included if you are a windsurfing fan. Beaches such as Playa de los Valdevaqueros are where the professionals come to wind and kite surf. Beginners should try the shallow waters of Playa Rio Jara or Playa los Lances.
