Almeria is an exotic, fascinating city thanks to it Arabic history and close proximity to North Africa. With its winding streets, ancient Alcazaba Castle and vibrant markets this is a city waiting to be explored. Daytime temperatures do hit 30C and over during the hottest months of July and August and evening temperatures are a minimum 20C. Slightly cooler temperatures of 20C to 23C can be found during the spring and autumn months and swimming is still an option. Winter in Almeria is still warm and sunny with temperatures of 15C and some infrequent light rainfall can occur.

Airport and transport need to know
There are direct flights from major cities to Almeria Airport (LEI) including London Gatwick, Birmingham, Glasgow, Bristol and Manchester. Flights are just under four hours depending on which airport you depart from. Almeria is located 10Km from Almeria Airport and has one of the fastest resort transfer times at approximately 15 minutes. Almeria Airport provides facilities including duty free shopping, a bar, restaurant, cafeteria and car hire.
Metered taxis from Almeria Airport to Almeria will cost approximately 12 euros (£10) per taxi. You can book online independently and hire a shuttle bus for the transfer to Almeria. Buses do run to Almeria bus and train station with a fare of 0.85 euros (£0.75). Hiring a car for a week is a relatively inexpensive alternative and car hire can be booked independently online. The roads in Almeria are in excellent condition and driving is on the right.
The best beaches in Almeria
Almeria is located on the Costa Almeria, a sun drenched region of Andalucia that stretches for around 200 Km. This coastline is home to some of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches in Europe. Golden beaches and clear Mediterranean waters are the major highlight here including the isolated beaches at Cabo de Gato Natural Park and the busy resort beaches of Aguadulce and Roquetas de Mar.
Often referred to as paradise, the Cabo de Gata Natural Park is the place to go for isolated beaches, many accessible only by footpath. This natural beauty spot includes Almeria City beach and boasts no less than seven Blue Flag awarded beaches. This is the place for exploring hidden coves and secluded bays surrounded by some of the most dramatic coastal scenery and an abundance of wildlife.
Aguadulce is located approximately 15 minutes from Almeria and this large Blue Flag beach is a favourite with families looking to relax on sun loungers while children play in the shallow waters. There are plenty of watersports available here or you can try your hand at golf at one of the three nearby courses. The marina area is the place to go during the evenings for restaurants and tapas bars serving traditional and modern dishes.
For a lively beach atmosphere take a trip to Roquetas de Mar, which is also a popular resort with Spanish holidaymakers. This 3Km stretch of sand does get busy at the weekends and the resort is one of the liveliest in the area with no shortage of watersports including scuba diving and jet skiing. Nights can be lively especially at the port with its many bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Before reaching the resort you can also stop off at the Mario water park, the aquarium or try go karting.
