When to go
Lluca remains a haven of calm during the classic Spanish holiday months of July and August, when Javea is enjoyably animated. June and September are much quieter. Late summer and early autumn see excellent weather and a very laid-back atmosphere. Spring arrives early and is an especially rewarding time. You can expect plenty of bright sunshine and very few people on local beaches.
Temperatures in spring and autumn are better for coast paths and trails in the Montgo National Park. Javea has enjoyable fiestas in mid-June and late August running into September. Classy accommodation, fine dining and mild sunny weather makes winter an attractive option.
The weather in Lluca
This scenic corner of the Costa Blanca is famous for its healthy climate. Sunshine is guaranteed during the main beach holiday season from June to September. Expect almost constant sunshine in July and August, with average highs around 30º. Breezes help to cool things down. Summer evenings temperatures of 20º are perfect for relaxed outdoor dining on villa patios. June and September are equally good.
Spring sees long days of bright sunshine and temperatures similar to a decent summer day in the UK. Lluca enjoys an average 5 hours a day of sunshine in winter, when temperatures are frequently a mild 15º.
Getting the best deal
Lluca villas and apartments are popular with discerning Spanish holidaymakers, who tend to book well in advance. Start searching early if planning a visit in July or August. Easter is also very popular. For cheaper holidays to Lluca try June and September, when there is normally more availability.
Lluca holidays will always cost more than the big tourist resorts but you should find good deals in spring and autumn, when Javea is especially relaxing and beaches are wonderfully quiet. Airport and transport need to know
Package holidays to Lluca will fly to Alicante (ALC) or Valencia (VLC). Both are large airports with plenty of shops and restaurants. Valencia is well served by low-cost airlines but Alicante has more flights and a much wider choice of UK departure airports. Average flight time to Alicante and Valencia is 2 hours 30 minutes.
Transfers to Lluca from Alicante and Valencia will take about an hour. Private shuttle companies offer competitive prices. A taxi from Alicante should cost about €90 (₤74). A touch more from Valencia. Buses run to Javea from Alicante and Valencia bus stations. Buses take 2-3 hours and cost around €11 (₤9). A simple self-drive journey by motorway from both Alicante and Valencia.
There is a good bus service to beach resort neighbours like Calpe and Denia. The loveliest way to travel locally is by coastal ferry.
The best beaches near Lluca
Costa Blanca beaches are very well maintained and offer considerable variety. Town centre beaches have sunbeds, beach bars, toilets and showers. Quieter coves with fewer facilities have a more secluded feel. Resorts have a genuine Spanish atmosphere. Beaches exist alongside working fishing ports and old town centres have character and historical interest. Getting to neighbouring beaches on local buses is cheap and easy.
The coastline in the Lluca region is the most varied and picturesque on the entire Costa Blanca. Around 15 miles of unspoilt coastline ensures plenty of variety and lots of space. Javea beaches are renowned for their sparklingly clear water.
Playa Arenal is the best sandy beach close to Javea town centre: a spacious 500 metre stretch of gently shelving sand ideal for relaxed swimming. Sunbeds and umbrellas for hire and well-maintained showers, toilets and changing rooms. A good collection of restaurants on a particularly attractive seafront promenade. The most popular beach near Lluca thanks to the quality of its sand.
In the busy summer season you may prefer to head for Playa Benissero. You will find plenty of space on this mile-long stretch of fine pale shingle. Equally close is the traditional family resort of Moraira. The main L’Ampolla beach is ideal for children and you will find another series of charming coves to explore.
For unspoilt beaches head for the Cala Blanca area of Javea. A series of picturesque coves with crystal clear waters popular with snorkellers. A scenic coast path starts from Cala Granadella.
