When to go
Spring arrives early and is especially rewarding. You can expect plenty of bright sunshine and very few people on local beaches. Temperatures in spring and autumn are better for coast paths and trails in the Montgo National Park. Late summer and early autumn see excellent weather and a very laid-back atmosphere.
La Cala really comes into its own in July and August. Downtown Javea is enjoyably lively but your accommodation remains blissfully peaceful. Javea is much quieter in June and September. La Cala holidays in mid-June and late August/early September will coincide with entertaining fiestas in Javea. Comfortable accommodation and mild sunny weather attract winter visitors.
The weather in La Cala
This picturesque corner of the Costa Blanca is famed for its healthy climate. Expect near constant hot sunshine during the main beach holiday season from June to September, with average highs around 30º. July and August can be hotter still. Breezes keep things comfortable on the beach. Summer evening temperatures of 20º are perfect for romantic meals on villa patios. June and September are just as good.
Spring is a lovely time to visit, with temperatures similar to a decent UK summer! A long Indian summer sees sunbathing weather continuing well into autumn. Winters are mild and sunny.
Getting the best deal
La Cala villas and apartments are popular with discerning Spanish holidaymakers, who tend to book well in advance. Start searching early if planning a visit in July or August. Easter is also very popular. For cheaper holidays to La Cala try June and September, when there is normally more availability.
La Cala holidays will always be pricier than the big tourist resorts but you should find good deals in spring and autumn, when Javea beaches are wonderfully quiet. Airport and transport need to know
Most package holidays to La Cala fly to Alicante (ALC) or Valencia (VLC). Plenty of shops and restaurants at both airports. Valencia has low-cost flights from the UK but Alicante flights depart from a much wider choice of regional UK airports. Typical flight time to Alicante and Valencia is 2 hours 30 minutes.
Private shuttle companies offer economical transfers to La Cala from Alicante and Valencia. It takes about an hour. Expect to pay around €90 (₤74) for a taxi from Alicante. A bit more from Valencia. Buses cost around €11 (₤9) but you will have to get to Alicante or Valencia bus station first. Buses take 2-3 hours . A good motorway from Alicante and Valencia is straightforward for self-drivers.
There is a good bus service from Javea to worthwhile neighbours like Calpe and Denia. You can also visit nearby resorts by boat.
The best beaches in La Cala
Costa Blanca beaches are safe, clean and well maintained. The main resort beaches have lots of affordable restaurants and good facilities. Quiet coves offer peace and seclusion. Resorts have a genuine Spanish feel. Coast towns have a lot of character and are not entirely dependent on tourism. Boats and buses are great for exploring neighbouring beaches.
Beaches near La Cala are the most diverse and picturesque beaches on the entire Costa Blanca. Around 15 miles of unspoilt coastline ensures plenty of variety. Sparklingly clear water makes for idyllic diving and snorkelling.
The Cala Blanca coastline features a series of picturesque rocky coves and scenic headlands. Scuba divers and snorkellers will love Cala Granadella, which is the starting point for a scenic coastal footpath. Those prepared to walk will find beautiful unspoilt beaches with very few people. Denia tourist office will have details of footpaths to beauty spots like Cala Sardinera. Few or no facilities at most of the smaller coves.
For a conventional family beach with good facilities head for the main Javea beach of Playa Arenal. This spacious 500 metre stretch is ideal for relaxed sunbathing and swimming. Gently shelving sand is good for children. Sunbeds for hire and well-maintained toilets, showers and changing rooms. Javea seafront has a particularly attractive promenade with a good collection of bars and restaurants. The most popular beach in Javea thanks to its quality sand.
Mile-long Playa Benissero, a fine beach of pale shingle, is a good alternative in peak summer. We also recommend the family beach of Ampolla at neighbouring Moraira. For a complete contrast make a daytrip to Benidorm. This unique resort is great fun for a day. It will also make the refined calm of La Cala seem even more attractive.
