Altea beaches are popular with Spanish holidaymakers in July and August but Altea la Vella remains a relaxing place once the day trippers have departed. June and September are far quieter. The weather in Altea la Vella
This part of the Costa Blanca offers very dependable sunshine throughout a long beach holiday season running from early spring to mid autumn. Guaranteed sunshine and temperatures around 30º in July and August, dropping to a comfortable 20º in the evening. Perfect for outdoor dining and terrace bars. June and September are also idyllic.
Spring weather is an absolute delight. April and May see long hours of bright sunshine without the heat of peak summer. Spring and early autumn are the best time to explore the region. Winters are mild. Even December and January see an average 5 hours a day of sunshine.
Getting the best deal to Altea la Vella
Altea la Vella has a relatively small pool of accommodation. Many of the best apartments and villas are booked a long time in advance. Do search early if looking for holidays to Altea la Vella in July or August. Early booking will guarantee a far better choice. Also consider moving down to Altea or nearby resorts like Albir and Calpe.

Airport and transport need to know
Package holidays to Altea la Vella will normally involve a flight to Alicante Airport (ALC) or Valencia Airport (VLC). Both are important Spanish airports with the usual collection of restaurants and shops.
The most convenient airport is Alicante, which receives year-round flights from UK airports like Gatwick, Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham. Well served by low-cost airlines from regional airports like Liverpool, Edinburgh and East Midlands. Flight time to Alicante and Valencia is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.
A transfer from Alicante takes about an hour. Expect to pay €80-90 (₤66-74) for a metered taxi. Alternatively, take a bus into Alicante city centre and then on to Altea. www.alsa.es. Transfers from Valencia and Murcia (MJV) take 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Altea la Vella is an easy journey by motorway from both Valencia and Alicante. There is an excellent local bus service from Altea to resorts like Javea, Denia and Benidorm.
The best beaches in Altea la Vella
Costa Blanca beaches are deservedly popular. The region offers a good mix of long sandy beaches and quiet coves. Beaches are clean and family-friendly. All the principal resorts will have sunbeds for hire and well-maintained toilets and showers. The main beach will have plenty of shops and affordable restaurants. Most resorts have easy access to quieter coves with fewer facilities. Exploring neighbouring resorts is cheap and easy on local buses.
You can walk to the beach from Altea la Vella though most opt for the convenient bus down to Altea beachfront. You have a choice of small bays and longer beaches with palm-lined promenades. Most beaches are small pebbles or a mix of shingle and sand. Beautifully clean water is ideal for diving and watersports.
Most visitors head for Playa de Cap Negret and adjoining Playa la Roda. Both are well-equipped family beaches with a wide choice of seafront bars and restaurants. Playa Cap Blanch is equally spacious. With a couple of miles of beach you won’t have a problem finding a quiet spot. Altea has outstanding conditions for watersport instruction. Excellent schools offer courses for all levels in diving, sailing, waterskiing and windsurfing.
For a more natural environment and greater seclusion head for one of the small coves found to either side of the main beaches. Favourites include Cala del Soio and peaceful spots like La Solsida and La Galera. Picturesque L’Olla beach is one of the closest to Altea la Vella.
Holidays to Altea la Vella can easily take in superb beaches at neighbouring resorts like Calpe and Albir. The latter has a spacious stretch of fine shingle and wide choice of economical restaurants. It’s also well worth making the short bus trip into Benidorm. Playa Levante and Playa Poniente are two of the finest sandy beaches in Spain. Benidorm is also tremendous fun for a day and has an inexhaustible choice of restaurants and bars.
