Albir Holidays – Relaxed resort with a great Costa Blanca location
Albir is just along the coast from Benidorm but has a very different atmosphere. This is a pleasantly relaxed destination with a spacious beach offering quiet sunbathing and pleasant promenade walks. This carefully maintained resort has a calm residential atmosphere. The town has a significant resident British community.
An enjoyably laid-back nightlife scene is a world away from Benidorm. Most visitors are happy to enjoy the friendly atmosphere of local bars and restaurants. The fine shingle beach tends to attract older holidaymakers looking for an unhurried holiday scene. Albir beach never feels crowded and is easy to combine with neighbouring resorts.
As well as Benidorm you can enjoy the sophisticated town of Altea, one of the most attractive small towns on the Costa Blanca. Holidays to Albir can combine beach relaxation with golf, tennis, bowls, theme parks and excursions to charming hill villages like Guadalest and Altea la Vieja.
When to go to Albir
Albir holidays are available all year round thanks to an exceptionally sunny climate and warm winter weather. Spring is a delightful time, with local residents gearing up for summer and acres of space on the beach. The mountainous interior is at its colourful best. There is an appealingly laid-back atmosphere in late summer. A large British resident community keeps the resort alive in the winter months.
Holidays in peak summer will find neighbouring Benidorm at its liveliest. June and September are considerably quieter than July and August but enjoy almost identical weather. Albir never feels crowded even in the busy school holiday season.
The weather in Albir
Few regions in Spain can compete with the Mediterranean coast in terms of sunshine. An exceptionally long summer sees day after day of uninterrupted sunshine without excessive heat. Average highs in August are a perfect 31º. Lovely evening temperatures around 20º are ideal for pavement cafes and restaurant terraces. June and September are equally good. Beautiful sunbathing weather usually continues throughout October and even into November.
Winters are mild. Expect an average 5-6 hours a day of bright sunshine and temperatures around 17º in January and February. Spring is an absolute delight. Average highs hit 20º as early as March.
Getting the best deal to Albir
The earlier you search the better. Albir is a resort where loyal visitors return year after year. Early booking will ensure a wider choice of hotels and apartments. The best-rated accommodation soon fills up in July and August. Most Spaniards also holiday at this time.
Albir holidays are often significantly cheaper in June and September. Also look out for bargains in spring and autumn, when Albir has a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere. Airport and transport need to know
Package holidays to Albir will usually include a flight to Alicante (ALC), a major Spanish airport with plenty of shops and restaurants. Alicante is very well served from the UK, with low-cost airlines flying all year round and additional charter flights in the summer. Plenty of flights from London, Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham. Also departures from regional airports like Liverpool, Bournemouth, Newcastle, and Cardiff. Flight time is about 2 hours 30 minutes. Albir is also accessible from Valencia Airport (VLC).
Transfer time from Alicante is about an hour. A taxi will cost about €80-90 (₤66-74). Direct buses run from the airport to Benidorm or you could take the airport bus into Alicante and then a bus to Albir.
A straightforward journey on the fast motorway heading for Benidorm. Take care if driving on narrow roads in the mountains. Drive on the right. Within the resort there is a very good cheap local bus service to Benidorm and Altea.
The best beaches in Albir
Costa Blanca beaches have always been very popular with UK holidaymakers. The region excels when it comes to well-equipped family beaches with well-maintained facilities and quick access to hotels, shops, restaurants and nightlife. The main resort beaches have sunbeds and parasols for hire. Neighbouring resorts are easily accessed by buses, coast paths and long seafront promenades.
Playa de Racó de l’Albir is the main resort beach. A broad spacious 600m stretch of fine shingle and pebbles that is easy on the feet. A very good beach for quiet sunbathing. Excellent water quality has ensured Blue Flag status for many years running. There is an area for beach games, a couple of playgrounds and plenty of sunbeds for hire. There are well-maintained toilets and lifeguards in the summer season. A choice of watersport specialists offers well-reputed courses in windsurfing, waterskiing, sailing, diving and parasailing. There is a good choice of cafes, bars and restaurants close to the beach.
For more seclusion head for the small nudist beach by the lighthouse. You will also find a series of unspoilt coves around the headland at the end of the beach known as Sierra Helada. Walking the continuous beachfront promenade from Albir is a great way to visit the upmarket resort of Altea.
There is also the option to visit the superb beaches of neighbouring resorts. For a complete contrast in atmosphere you could make the 20 minute bus trip into Benidorm. The nightlife gets all the attention but many people forget that Benidorm has two of the very finest beaches in Spain. Both Playa Levante and Playa Poniente are tremendous beaches and always provide plenty of entertainment and spectacle. Lots to do in the day and an inexhaustible choice of restaurants and bars at night. An affordable taxi ride home for those who stay out late.
