Holidays in Vilaflor

Vilaflor holidays – Chill out in the spectacular mountains!

Vilaflor holidays are perfect if you prefer stunning vistas and mountain landscapes to the coast’s vibrant, lively resorts and enjoy something a bit different. Set inland at 1400m above sea level, it’s Tenerife’s highest village in the dramatic south, famous for its Fuentealta mineral water and the gorgeous Las Canadas natural park. Just 16 miles north west of Tenerife South airport, you might as well be on a different planet. It’s quiet and peaceful, attracting adventurous day trippers from the coast and capturing visitors exploring the magnificent Tiede volcano.

The village is surrounded by fragrant pine forests and offers amazingly pure, clear air, a perfect base from which to enjoy walking, climbing, mountain biking and paragliding. Romantic couples love it. Home to the island’s best known craftsman, you can buy beautiful embroidery, ceramics and pottery there and because it’s on the route from the south of the island, you can always drop down for a day at Playa de las Americas, the closest beach.

When to go to Vilaflor

Holidays to Vilaflor in May and June are a visual feast with the delightful little Canary Islands flower, the Tajinaste, festooning the landscape and the region at its greenest. Most hikers and active types visit Vilaflor in the high season, during summer, but because the village is at such a high altitude, it’s comfortably warm and pleasant rather than madly hot. Vilaflor fills up during the day with coachloads of day trippers but at night it tends to quieten down.  There are limited facilities in the village but if you’re attracted to landscapes like this and love peace and quiet, it’s absolutely perfect.

The weather in Vilaflor

Because of its exceptionally high altitude, the weather in Vilaflor is cooler than the coastal tourist hotspots. From January to March you’ll enjoy mild daytime temperatures of 13C average, 6-7C at night. April to June it warms up slowly to 15-20C and in the peak summer season Vilaflor temperatures average a balmy 22-24C during the day, 14-15C at night, with ten hours of pure sunshine a day. Package holidays to Vilaflor in October to December are quietest, with daytime temperatures descending from 19-13C respectively. It never gets humid and there’s a chance of rain all year round, minimal in summer and most likely from October to March.

Getting the best deal to Vilaflor

There are only a few hotels in Vilaflor and if you want to stay there rather than just visit on a day trip, the peak summer season gets busy so it’s wise to book early. Fewer people visit the village in spring, autumn and winter because the weather, while still glorious compared to the UK, isn’t anywhere near as hot as it is along the coast. Sometimes, in winter, the rain turns to snow high up, when people are still sunbathing on the beaches far, far below. To help you along your way we’ve collected together some of the best Vilaflor deals below. Alternatively why not enjoy exploring our special late deals offers and travel to this unique destination for less?

Airport and transport need to know

All UK flights to Tenerife land at Tenerife South airport (TFS). It’s incredibly busy in the peak summer season but things move surprisingly quickly. If you get bored, there are plenty of interesting shops to explore. You can fly direct to Tenerife South airport from a wide choice of major and local UK airports and it takes between 35-40 minutes to reach Vilaflor by road, a spectacularly scenic journey.

A private taxi transfer takes about 40 minutes and costs around £22 per person. A ten seater minibus ought to cost about £165 return, great if you’re part of a large group.  You may need to shop around online since not all airport transfer companies offer services to Vilaflor. If you decide to pick up a taxi at the airport instead of pre-booking, fix the price in advance with your driver. If you hire a car at the airport, remember to drive on the right and take care – the mountain roads are… well, mountainous, to say the least!
