Puerto de la Cruz Holidays
Puerto de la Cruz holidays – Upmarket, quaint and vibrant
Upmarket Puerto de la Cruz, just 22 miles from Santa Cruz, was once a tiny fishing village. It offers a wealth of pretty, traditional Canary Islands architecture and the fishing fleet still operates out of its scenic little harbour. If you love seafood, it’s as fresh as it gets! There are three small beaches to enjoy, all with dramatic, dark volcanic sand, plus Playa de las Teresitas nearby, with its golden sand imported from the Sahara. If you’re bold there’s Las Gavistas, the local nudist beach. The magnificent salt water Lido at Lago de Martianez has eight pools, bars and eateries. And the Old Town is gorgeous, complete with ancient buildings and excellent, if expensive, shopping. Puerto de la Cruz holidays are a feast of fine dining, smart hotel bars and clubs (based in the new town), a popular year-round destination for people of every age and taste.
When to go to Puerto de la Cruz
Spring holidays to Puerto de la Cruz are at their most peaceful and mellow, and it gets slowly but steadily busier until the summer high season. It quietens back down after the school summer holidays, slowly building up again from October onwards as people seek more or less guaranteed winter sun. Winter holidays peak in the early part of the year, as temperatures remain wonderfully mild and warm. The Tenerife carnival season kicks off for real in February, at which point the town becomes very crowded, nosy and vibrant. Flights and accommodation are usually cheapest outside the school holidays.
The weather in Puerto de la Cruz
Like the rest of Tenerife, the seasons in Puerto de la Cruz mirror those of the UK… but so much nicer! January to March bring daytime temperatures averaging 18-21C, 12-14C at night. Summer nights average 18C and you’ll enjoy 9-10 hours a day of pure Canarian sunshine. Late in the year, from October to Christmas, package holidays to Puerto de la Cruz deliver temperatures averaging a lovely 19-24C, perfect for winter sun. There’s a risk of rain between October and March but it’s wonderfully warm and invariably clears quickly.

Airport and transport need to know
The vast majority of UK flights put down at Tenerife South airport (TFS). As you can imagine, with literally millions of us flying to the island at peak times, it can get incredibly busy, particularly on Tuesdays and Fridays when British charter flights land. But it’s packed with good shops to keep you entertained and they’re used to dealing with large crowds efficiently.
Tenerife is enormously popular and you can fly direct to the island from any number of local and major airports including the London airports, Belfast, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. Once you’re there, it takes around an hour to an hour and a quarter to transfer to the town, costing approximately £53 return per person by shuttle transfer, £255 by private taxi for 1-4 of you and if you catch a private minibus, for 5-8 people, a return ticket costs about £575.
