Playa de las Americas holidays – Ideal for couples, families & groups

Playa de las Americas on Tenerife is one of the island’s most popular party resorts, enjoyed by families, young couples and groups of friends. There’s an excellent, large white sandy beach, a host of lively bars and great restaurants serving every imaginable type of food, from Indian to traditional Canarian and fish ‘n’ chips. Playa de las Americas holidays are an endless exciting round of jet skiing, beach games, karaoke and cabaret, waterparks, spas, whale watching… and a casino if you fancy a holiday flutter! The resort runs seamlessly into the quieter Los Cristianos, with its luxurious hotels and beautiful, exotic architecture, so there’s even plenty of potential for relaxation if you tire of all the excitement. When to go

Holidays to Playa de las Americas are popular in the height of the summer holiday season, and almost as well loved during the winter when the island’s weather is usually deliciously mild and almost always sunny. The resort’s night clubs are busiest in summer, located in the Starco, Veronicas and The Patch areas, so the resort tends to attract younger people in the high season, older people off season. Because the resort sits off the African coast, there’s a slight risk of dust storms which blow off the Sahara in late winter and early spring, between February and March.

The weather in Playa de las Americas

Many holidaymakers book package holidays to Playa de las Americas simply because you can rely on the weather to be totally fantastic almost all of the time! Africa’s desert winds can also cause rapid temperature spikes in summer, often in August, when it can suddenly become ridiculously hot. If you suffer in extreme heat, it’s probably best to avoid the resort during August. The hottest months are July to October, peaking at an average 29C during the day and 20C at night with 10 hours of sunshine during July. November to late January sees some rain, but it rarely gets cooler than 19C in daytime and 14C at night.

Getting the best deal

Tenerife is an all-year-round sunshine destination and as such it’s popular most of the year. As with many destinations, it can be a lot cheaper outside the British school holidays and even more so off-season in spring and winter. Airport and transport need to know

Tenerife’s southern airport, Reina Sofia (TFS), is accessible from any number of British regional and major airports including Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Bristol and London, with six airlines currently flying direct to the island from London airports. Playa de las Americas is just nine miles or so from the airport and the island’s excellent bus services run between it and the resort regularly. If your package tour doesn’t include transfers to your hotel, you can pre-book a private shuttle transfer from around £3 per person return, or a taxi from about £40, and the journey usually takes about half an hour. Bear in mind that the airport can get extremely busy during the high season, as it serves all of Tenerife’s many resorts, so prepare for queues!
