La Caleta Holidays
La Caleta holidays – Relaxing and quiet with lively resorts nearby
The pretty little fishing village of La Caleta lies just 15 miles west of Tenerife Reina Sofia International Airport (TFS). It’s a deliciously quiet resort, with only a handful of non-hotel bars and restaurants. The wonderfully clear waters are perfect for snorkelling. The resort’s small beach is made up of sand, pebbles and rocks, with the gorgeous sandy Playa de la Enramada beach only a few minutes away. (Watch out for the Playa de Diego Hernández, to the north of Caleta, which is popular with nudists). The resort offers numerous excellent restaurants serving the island’s famously fresh traditional fish cuisine and the views to La Gomera, the nearest neighbouring island, are breath-taking. La Caleta is most popular with couples and families who enjoy peace and quiet, but you always have the option of visiting one of the noisier, livelier nearby resorts like Playa de las Americas and Playa El Duque if you feel like partying.
When to go
Holidays to La Caleta are in demand all year round because of the lovely Canary Islands climate. And there’s something going on all year too. There’s the San Sebastian Festival in January, held in nearby Adeje and including a parade of horses and farm animals, which are herded down to the beach for a swim. Obviously the island’s excellent golf is equally good all year round and although winter is quieter, the resort’s popularity with older people means there’s still plenty of entertainment to be had. There are even a host of New Year parties to enjoy, so it’s a genuine all year rounder.
The weather in La Caleta
The best weather in La Caleta tends to be July, with average daytime temperatures of 27C dropping just a few degrees at night to a balmy 20C. August is usually the hottest and most humid month with temperatures often soaring beyond 30C, with ten hours of sunshine a day, but the heat is tempered beautifully by the gentle sea breezes. In October it averages 26C and December sees temperatures averaging 20C, a real treat for you compared the chilly UK! There’s some rain between November and February but only a little, and the sea, perfect for swimming at all times, is warmest in the autumn.
Getting the best deal
You can find great deals to Caleta all year round but it’s busiest and most expensive in the school holidays, during summer in particular. Because the island’s climate is so fantastic all year round, it’s also popular in spring, autumn and winter, with Brits escaping the UK’s unreliable weather for sun-filled beach breaks throughout the year. It’s quieter off season as a general rule, with Christmas and winter sun breaks tending to attract older people. Spring breaks are also great value if you want guaranteed sunshine and lots of lovely warmth. We’ve put together a choice of the best deal to Caleta below. Airport and transport need to know
La Caleta is just a short hop from bustling Reina Sofia airport, TFA, also known as Tenerife South and the destination for almost all the island’s package flights. Watch out for crowds at the airport during peak times, when it gets very busy. At least you’ll enjoy a nice, short 15 mile transfer, taking 20-30 minutes along the island’s main road, the TF1 motorway.
Most package deals include transfers but if not the airport is well served by buses, with regular local bus services to nearby resorts. Here’s a link to the island’s local bus timetable: http://www.titsa.com/index.php?idioma=1. Taxis operate a fixed price system and a four passenger cab ought to cost around £40 per vehicle for a single trip, around £12.45 per person by shuttle bus. You can fly direct to Tenerife South from any number of convenient UK airports including Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and Leicestershire.
