Things To Do
Discover Ancient Civilizations
If you have a passion for the past, a holiday to Guimar is the perfect way to explore Tenerife’s pre-Hispanic history. This charming rural village, only 2kms from the sea, is full of fascinating historic sites and was actually one of the nine kingdoms of the Guanches when Fernandez de Lugo landed on Tenerife in 1494.
Guimar Pyramids & Volcano
No holiday to Guimar is complete without a trip to the mysterious, prehistoric pyramids, which have been closely linked to those found in Mexico, ancient Mesopotamia and Peru. Discovered in 1991 and recently restored, their existence suggests that the Guanches may have had contact with America even before Columbus! The Guimar Pyramids Ethnographic Park is of great archaeological importance and includes a leisure area and museum. Don’t miss the nearby Guimar volcano, famous for its crater, 300m in circumference and 60m deep.
Candelaria
One of the advantages of taking a holiday here is your proximity to one of the island’s prettiest towns and a famous religious centre. Candelaria is home to the patron saint of the Canaries and the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria, and is well worth a visit.
Beaches
Choose a holiday in Guimar to relax, chill out and enjoy the sun. Just to the north lies the lovely pebble beach at Las Caletillas or head further up the coast to the golden bay of Playa de las Teresitas, a real treat when the local black sand gets too hot! For watersports, travel south to the bustling resorts and man-made white sandy shores of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas. Take time to visit Playa La Arena on the west coast, a stunning natural black sand beach which holds the European Blue Flag and is ideal for families.
Teide National Park & Mount Teide
Guimar is only 10km from some of the most spectacular volcanic landscape in Tenerife. The Teide National Park is dominated by the majestic, snow-capped Mount Teide. Forming the northern ridge of a huge dormant volcano, its soaring peak measures 3,718m (Spain’s highest). For one of the best views on the island, take the cable car, Teleferico del Teide, as far as La Rambleta or drive the 17km around the crater to get an idea of the sheer magnitude of the world’s third largest volcano. If you’re feeling adventurous, the park is full of interesting hiking trails. Discover the magical, unspoilt wilderness of weird rock formations, rare wild flowers and the wonderful indigenous birds and animals.
Los Gigantes
Another of Tenerife's awe-inspiring natural wonders are Los Gigantes. Situated on the northwest coast of Tenerife, ‘The Giants’ are huge imposing cliffs that rise up from the crystal clear waters to form an almost vertical wall as high as 550m in some places. Take a boat trip from Puerto Santiago or swim off the beach at Los Gigantes to appreciate the full impact of their colossal size. This is also a great place to spot dolphins and other marine life, so try out the diving and watersports while you’re here.
