Guimar Holidays
Guimar holidays – Splendid sunny solitude in North Tenerife
The sunny Vegas del Valle of Guimar, 17 miles from Santa Cruz, is one of Tenerife’s oldest and most beautiful settlements, set in a region famed for its glorious wines, grapes, bananas, avocados, tomatoes, pumpkins and fruit trees, green and lush. Guimar is a quiet village perfect for relaxing holidays away from the everyday hustle and bustle, but close to the capital, Santa Cruz, just 17 miles away.
The local fishing fleet unloads at the harbour, which means the seafood is fantastically fresh. And like all Tenerife resorts, there are numerous colourful religious celebrations to enjoy throughout the year on Guimar holidays, the most popular of which is the Bajada del Socorro, in early September, where a statue of the Virgin is carried from the church of San Pedro to scenic Socorro next to Chimisay beach. The nearest beach is just 3 miles from the village and the famous Pyramids of Guimar, six terraced pyramids built from volcanic lava, are in nearby Chacona.
When to go to Guimar
Often called the European Caribbean, the Canary Islands offer a year-round excellent climate. And holidays to Guimar whisk you away to a mini-Canarian paradise, with beautiful weather all year round. One of the best times to visit Guimar is for the famous Las Burras de Guimar festival in February, which celebrates the village’s mystic legends of witches and devils, dramatic and colourful. Like most Tenerife resorts it’s busiest in the high season, through the school holidays, but the wonderful climate and endless stream of carnivals makes it a top destination for fun, sunshine, sea, sand, great food and relaxing nights at every time of year.
The weather in Guimar
Package holidays to Guimar for lazy days on the beach are at their best in summer, and well into autumn. September, October and November offer gorgeous weather, with average daytime temperatures around 24C, 22C and 20C respectively. It’s warm enough to swim in the winter, at its warmest in September and October after a summer’s worth of sunshine, and the mild autumn and winter temperatures mean it’s a prime destination off-peak for walkers and hikers. The region is particularly lovely in spring when it’s at its greenest and most lush.

Airport and transport need to know
Tenerife’s Reina Sofia airport (TFS) in the south of the island is your first stop. The northerly airport, Tenerife North, mostly deals with inter-island and commercial flights. The Canaries are very popular and you can fly from any number of convenient British airports, regional and main, including London Gatwick and Luton, Liverpool, Manchester, Edinburgh, Leeds, Newcastle and Glasgow.
In peak season the airport gets very busy, but there are plenty of cafes, bars and shops to explore while you wait. It’s 26 miles or so from the airport to Guimar and it should take around 40 minutes. There are bus stops opposite the Arrivals gate and Route 111 to Santa Cruz drops off at the Guimar intersection, with a single fare of around a fiver. Here’s a link to Tenerife’s bus timetable: http://www.titsa.com/index.php?idioma=1. A private cab for 1-4 people usually costs about £100 for a single trip, around £25 each, and £150 for 5-8 people, about £30 each.
