Playa de los Pocillos Holidays – A relaxing base within walking distance of Puerto del Carmen
Playa de los Pocillos is one of the newest resorts in Lanzarote, having been developed in the 1990’s. Essentially a suburb of the boisterous Puerto del Carmen located roughly a mile away, Playa de los Pocillos offers the best of both worlds; easy access to the vibrant nightlife of its larger neighbour, and a quiet base to come back to. The resort also has its own expansive blue flag beach.
Package holidays to Playa de los Pocillos tend to be popular with families and older couples, as the atmosphere is laid-back and less frenetic than Puerto del Carmen proper. An attractive promenade connects the resort to nearby Matagorda; another recently developed ‘suburb’ of Puerto del Carmen, with its own attractive beach.
When to go
As a satellite of Puerto del Carmen – the largest and busiest resort on Lanzarote - Playa de los Pocillos is understandably busy all year round. The peak summer months of July-September and the winter sun holiday period (November-April) can see huge crowds descend on the resort.
The least expensive times to go are in the spring and autumn (June-May and October-early November), as these periods are considered ‘off peak’ and you’re more likely to benefit from lower prices.
The weather in Playa de los Pocillos
The weather in Playa de los Pocillos is consistently good all year round, with average summer temperatures of between 25-30°C and average winter temperatures between 17-25°C. The hottest months are July, August and September, with average maximum highs of around 27°C. The sea is warm enough to swim here throughout the year, rarely dipping below 18°C in the winter and reaching up to 22°C in the height of summer.
Because Playa de los Pocillos is located in the least mountainous area of the island, surrounded by flat land, it has a warm, dry climate that sees little rain throughout the year. The wettest months are between November-March, when there is an average of 4-5 days rain a month. Evening temperatures during the winter can be chilly (as low as 10°C).

Lanzarote Arrecife is the only airport on the island. It is compact but busy, and has recently had a second terminal added. International flights will fly into Terminal 1, which is where the majority of shops and restaurants are located.
It takes just 20 minutes to reach Playa de los Pocillos by car. There is no public bus service to speak of that runs to the resort, and no train connection. The best way to get there is by taxi. Taxis run on meter and can take up to 4 people. The taxi rank is located outside the arrival hall at Terminal 1. Alternatively, hiring a car can work out highly cost effective, as petrol is much cheaper in Lanzarote than the UK, and car hire starts from as little as €15 per day.
The best beaches in Playa de los Pocillos
The beaches south of Arrecife on the east coast of Lanzarote are known as some of the largest on the island. They tend to have fine golden sand and calm waters. Due to their close proximity to the lively resort of Puerto del Carmen, these beaches can get very busy during the peak seasons.
Playa de los Pocillos beach
Playa de los Pocillos beach is a curving, horseshoe-shaped bay that stretches for around 1,200m. It has toasted gold sand and warm shallow waters. The beach has been awarded the blue flag for cleanliness, and can get very busy, particularly at weekends. A good selection of bars, restaurants and shops sit behind the beach, including two shopping centres; Jameos Shopping Centre at one end and the Mall Pocillos around halfway along. An attractive, newly-built promenade connects Playa de los Pocillos to neighbouring Matagorda.
Playa Grande beach
Arguably the most popular beach in the region, the Playa Grande is located right in the heart of Puerto del Carmen. As such, it can also get very busy, but has the benefit of being close to a multitude of facilities. This beach is considered ideal for those with children due to its shallow, calm waters, nearby bathroom facilities, and abundance of parasols. Overlooking the beach is a shopping complex surrounded by palm trees; the “Atlántico”. On New Year’s Eve there is a huge celebration here with fireworks and an orchestra, and the beach is the venue for part of Lanzarote’s ‘Iron Man’ competition in May.
Playa Chica beach
Playa Chica is a small, attractive beach located in the Old Town area of Puerto del Carmen. Due to its diminutive size, it can get quite crowded during the summer. There is a good selection of watersports to try here, as well as the opportunity for scuba diving. If you get there early to get a good spot and don’t mind the crowds, this can be lovely beach to while away the hours. It also has the benefit of being just a 5 minute walk from the restaurants and bars of the harbour.
