Playa Blanca Holidays – The best weather and beaches in Lanzarote
A former fishing village located on the southern tip of Lanzarote, Playa Blanca is one of the newest and fastest growing of the island’s resorts. Despite this, the town has stayed true to its coastal village roots and has carved a niche for itself as Puerto del Carmen’s quieter sister; a place favoured by families and couples looking for a relaxing holiday. Playa Blanca boasts one of the prettiest coastlines on Lanzarote with the sandy coves and shallow waters of the Papagayo Beaches. There is also a newly developed port, the Marina Rubicón, with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants looking across a yacht-filled harbour. Guests looking to explore the area will find the nearby Timanfaya National Park a 15 minute drive away.
When to go
If you are planning to go to Lanzarote during the winter season, Playa Blanca is arguably the best resort on the island to stay. Its southerly position means that it benefits from less wind and hotter, sunnier weather during the winter months, making it preferable for a winter sun holiday over the more northerly Costa Teguise.
Playa Blanca will be at its busiest during the peak summer months of July and August, as well as between November-April with winter sun seekers. May-June and late September-October are less busy and have excellent weather also; many consider these the best months to visit Lanzarote.
The most expensive times for holidays to Playa Blanca will be during school and public holidays, notably over Easter and the school summer holidays period.
The weather in Playa Blanca
Playa Blanca has arguably the best weather on Lanzarote, with far less wind than towns on the north coast and warmer, sunnier winters. Like the rest of the island, Playa Blanca is clement all year round, but the hottest months will be July, August and September. Temperatures during these months generally range between 25-30 °C, with an average maximum temperature of 27°C.
During the winter months, although daytime temperatures can rise as high as the mid-twenties nights can be much colder (as low as 10°C). As such if you intend to visit between November-February, it’s wise to pack some warm clothing. Nights during the summer rarely fall below 20°C.
Getting the best deal
The cheapest times for package holidays to Playa Blanca are the spring and autumn months (May-June and October-November). These periods sit between the peak summer season and the busy winter sun period. During spring and autumn you will benefit from off-peak prices on both flights and accommodation, and what’s more the weather will be ideal – pleasantly warm during the day but without the chilly nights that can come with winter.
Aside from this, the usual rules for holiday bookings apply; it’s generally more expensive during the school holidays, and booking early is likely to get you the best prices.

Airport and transport need to know
Those flying to Playa Blanca will arrive at the island’s sole airport, the Lanzarote Arrecife (ACE). Busy for its size, the airport has recently been developed with a second terminal. The majority of shops and restaurants are found at Terminal 1.
You can fly to Lanzarote from London (all airports), Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and many of the smaller regional airports such as Bournemouth and Exeter.
Transfer from the airport to Playa Blanca takes around an hour. Thursday is ‘changeover day’ for many of the resorts on the island, and therefore the busiest day at the airport.
The easiest way to get from the airport to the resort is by taxi. The taxi rank is located outside the arrival hall at Terminal 1. Taxis run on a meter, with a maximum of 4 people per vehicle. Private car hire is relatively cheap (starting from around €15 per day), and petrol is cheaper than in the UK. Cars drive on the right-hand side of the road. There is no public bus or train service from the airport to Playa Blanca.
The best beaches in Playa Blanca
Holidays in Playa Blanca are all about the beach. This area of Lanzarote boasts some of the best beaches on the island as well as the best weather for relaxing in the sun. The beaches here have predominantly white or golden sand as opposed to the black volcanic sand often associated with the Canary Islands. There is a good mix of secluded coves for those looking to get away from the crowds, as well as long stretches of sand closer to the resort centre with overlooking shops, restaurants and bars for those who like their conveniences nearby.
Playa Blanca beach
Playa Blanca beach is great for convenience; based in the heart of the resort, the beach backs on to a huge number of bars, shops and restaurants. This beach is relatively small, and was the focal point of the original fishing village that stood here. Because of its small size and central location, Playa Blanca beach can become quite crowded in peak season. The water here is crystal clear and warm for most of the year, and the beach offers excellent views of neighbouring Fuerteventura.
Playa Dorada beach
Translated as ‘the Golden Beach’, Playa Dorada is a man-made beach found a few minutes’ walk to the east of Playa Blanca resort. The calm waters here are favoured by locals, who like to take a morning swim in the clear blue sea. Being fairly close to the resort centre, there is a good range of facilities servicing the beach including shops, restaurants and bars. You can also enjoy a host of watersports here.
Papagayo beach
One of the most famous beaches in the Canaries, Papagayo actually consists of several small sandy coves, separated by imposing cliffs that form a series of secluded, sheltered bays. The area has been recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty and turned into a national park. As such, it is undeveloped with no facilities or services to speak of – remember to pack a picnic! The beaches are accessed by a bumpy dirt track road or a costal pathway. There is a small toll to use the road. If you do not have a 4x4 vehicle to get there, a nice way to reach the coves are by water taxi, which leaves from Playa Blanca harbour for a small fee.
