Fuencaliente Holidays

Cheap holidays to La Palma

A beautiful volcanic landscape
Fuencaliente is located on the very southern tip of La Palma, and is an area rich in volcanic activity, with a series of unusual black beaches. Its’ name meaning ‘hot spring’, or ‘warm fountain’, Fuencaliente is the site of seven volcanoes, the most recent of which being Teneguia, which erupted in 1971, and lasted 24 days. The areas surrounding Fuencaliente consist of pine forests, vineyards and banana plantations, and offer a stark contrast to the barren ashy craters of the volcanoes.

An area rich in volcanic activity

The coastline of Fuencaliente consists of a series of small coves and beaches – all with the characteristic black sand of the volcanic region. One of the best beaches is La Zamora, a quiet and fairly isolated beach, comprised of black sand and pebbles, and others to visit include Punta Largo, Playa Nueva and El Faro. The stretch of coastline is one of the best on La Palma for scuba-diving, home to some incredible black coral amongst the underground caverns, and the southerly location of Fuencaliente results in some stunning views across to La Gomera. The town of Fuencaliente has some traditional streets and houses, and some pretty squares, and is home to a fully working and traditional red and white striped lighthouse on the beach.

The main wine-producing area in La Palma

A combination of the rich volcanic earth and the temperate climate creates the perfect environment for the vineyards of Fuencaliente, and the region is the main wine producing area on La Palma. Local ‘bodegas’ offer tastings of the local wine, with one of the main ones being Teneguia wine, named after the most recent volcano to erupt. The incredible craters of both Teneguia and San Antonia are worth a visit, as is the Cumbre Vieja National Park. Fuencaliente is a popular destination for both bird-watchers and hikers.
