When to go to San Agustin
Gran Canaria enjoys beach holiday sunshine all year round so weather is never an issue. San Agustin is quiet outside of the peak summer holiday season but neighbouring Playa del Ingles is always lively. Restaurants attract locals at the weekends so the resort never feels deserted. Spring weather is simply gorgeous. This is the ideal season for relaxed sunbathing. June to September sees long days of perfect beach holiday weather and a real buzz in neighbouring Playa del Ingles. The weather in San Agustin
Gran Canaria is the perfect sunshine holiday destination, and San Agustin has some of the best weather on the island. Expect a comfortable 30º in summer and a warm 20º in winter .Sunshine is guaranteed. Warm summer evenings see temperatures around 20º. Perfect for romantic pavement cafes and outdoor dining. Beautifully warm water makes for relaxed swimming and snorkelling. Take extra sun protection if heading for the Maspalomas sand dunes. San Agustin holidays in springtime are simply idyllic. Getting the best deal to San Agustin
Searching well in advance is recommended. San Agustin sees a lot of return visitors and there is a far smaller pool of accommodation than Playa del Ingles. The best hotels and apartments are snapped up early, leaving a more limited choice nearer the date. Especially the case in the popular summer, Easter and Christmas school holidays. Airport and transport need to know
Flights arrive at Gran Canaria Airport, also called Las Palmas Airport (LPA). A modern airport with a modest collection of shops, bars and restaurants. Good supply of cheap flights from London, Manchester and Birmingham. Airlines like Thomas Cook and Ryanair also operate Gran Canaria flights from regional airports like Liverpool, Newcastle, Bristol, Glasgow and Cardiff. Flight time is approximately 4 hours 15 minutes.
The 27km transfer to San Agustin takes 25 minutes. The journey by public bus costs just €4 (£3) www.globalsu.net. Metered airport taxis to San Agustin should cost around €30 (£25). More at night and weekends. A motorway links the airport with San Agustin. Take care on narrow roads if driving into the interior. The congested centre of Las Palmas is best avoided. Drive on the right.
There are good coastal bus services to Las Palmas, Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas. A full taxi is a cheap way home from Playa del Ingles.
The best beaches in San Agustin
Gran Canaria resorts cater for a wide variety of holiday styles. Beaches are more developed and have more facilities than those on Fuerteventura. Large resorts like Puerto Rico and Maspalomas typically offer a choice of beach atmospheres. You will always find a well-equipped and well supervised family beach with sunbeds, parasols, toilets, showers, changing rooms and beach bars. Additional beach areas cater for naturists, walkers and watersports fans.
South coast resorts are close together, making it easy to sample different beaches in the same holiday.
San Agustin is the first of a string of superb beaches that continues to upmarket Meloneras. All resorts offer relaxed sunbathing, safe swimming, good watersports and plenty of shops and restaurants on pleasant promenades.
Playa San Agustin is a sheltered 700m stretch of dark sand shelving gently into calm water. Superb conditions for relaxed swimming, snorkelling and diving lessons. All three sections of the beach have plenty of space for sunbathing. A laid back promenade is home to some exceptional fish restaurants popular with locals at weekends. San Agustin never feels crowded. Beautiful sandy beaches extend for miles to the south if you want more seclusion.
The famously lively beach of Playa del Ingles has to be seen to be believed. A splendid mile-and-a-half beach that remains enjoyably animated all year round. The hugely entertaining promenade is packed with shops, bars, cafes, restaurants, pubs and nightlife. Just 5 miles south of San Agustin.
All San Agustin holidays should also take in the famous Maspalomas sand dune nature reserve. Wonderful walks along the shoreline and secluded suntraps among the dunes. For restaurants and facilities stick close to Maspalomas or Playa del Ingles. There are regularly spaced beach bars and sunbeds for hire.
