Airport and transport need to know
Puerto Rico holidays are available all year round from London, Manchester and Birmingham. Also flights from regional airports like Newcastle, Bristol, Liverpool, Bournemouth and Cardiff. Flight time is about 4 hours 15 minutes.
Flights head for Gran Canaria Airport, also known as Las Palmas Airport (LPA). The airport has a few shops, bars and restaurants. A transfer to Puerto Rico will usually take about 50-60 minutes. You can take a bus from the airport for about €7 (₤6). www.globalsu.net. An airport taxi to Puerto Rico should cost about €54-61 (₤45-51) Taxis are metered.
Driving is straightforward. A good motorway connects the airport with the popular south-coast area. Take care on narrow twisting roads in the mountains. Avoid congested Las Palmas. Drive on the right.
Cheap local buses are great for exploring quieter beaches in neighbouring resorts like Playa Taurito and Playa del Cura. Boats also travel up and down the coast. Resort taxis are cheap and easy to find.
The best beaches in Puerto Rico
Gran Canaria excels when it comes to sandy beaches with good facilities. Seafront areas are usually free of traffic. You will find affordable bars and restaurants close to the beach. All the popular resorts have well-maintained showers and toilets plus an area with sunbeds for hire. Perhaps the only thing missing is the wilderness beaches of islands like Fuerteventura.
