Son Parc Holidays - A beautiful beach in a secluded location

A small, secluded resort located on the north-east coast of the island, Son Parc is a great choice for older couples or families with small children. The town is built in an attractive area of pine woods and valleys; turn left and you’ll come to an attractive sandy beach, turn right and you’ll find quiet wooded hillsides dotted with white-washed villas. The bigger low-rise hotels are found on the headland.

There is one main street known as The Strip, where a handful of low-key bars, restaurants and shops provide all the essentials needed for a relaxing holiday. Nearby Es Mercadal provides better shopping if needed. Bus services run to Fornells to the north and Mahon to the south on a daily basis apart from Sundays. Son Parc boasts the island’s only golf course. Horse-riding, sailing, tennis and diving are also popular here. All in all this is a great spot for a laid-back holiday – although families with teenagers and younger couples may find it a little too quiet in the evening for their tastes.

When to go

Even by Menorca’s standards, Son Parc is fairly quiet. You won’t find the crowds and hustle and bustle associated with some of the more manic resorts of the Balearic Islands such as Magaluf here. Even during the peak summer months of June-August, when the resort is at its busiest and the weather at its best, you’ll always find a space to sit on the beach.

Spring (April-May) is a nice time to visit, with pleasantly warm temperatures and lower accommodation prices than in the peak season. This is a great time to head down to the S'Albufera Parc Natural; the flowers will be in bloom and the trees starting to blossom, making exploring the woodlands and sand dunes a pleasure. Towards the end of October the resort begins to close down, so bear this in mind if you’re looking for an autumn holiday.

The weather in Son Parc

Holidays to Son Parc will see agreeably clement weather for most of the year. Spring has warm average maximum temperatures of 18-21C, with 7-9 hours of sunshine a day. The summer (June-August) heats up to between 25-28C, and sees a glorious 10-11 hours of sunshine. The good weather continues throughout the autumn (September-October), with average highs of 22-26C. By the start of November the resorts position on the north coast sees it suffer from the buffeting tramuntana winds, as well as increased rainfall. The winter period of November-March sees temperatures drop right down to 14-18C, with just 4-5 hours sunshine in the depths of winter. The resort virtually closes down over this period and is not open to tourists.

The best beaches in Son Parc

The north coast of Menorca is far more wild and rugged than the south, battered as it is by the strong tramuntana wind. The sand here often has a reddish-ochre hue, with beaches set in small coves and stunning landscapes.

Son Parc Beach

The beach at Son Parc is large and sandy, with an attractive sand dune area separating it from the resort. The western end of the beach has a bar/restaurant as well as public toilets and a car park. The beach is sheltered in a protective bay, making the water relatively calm – ideal for families with small children. There are lifeguards here and watersports to try, including jet skis, pedaloes, water-skiing and wind surfing.

Cala Tirant Beach

A small, sandy bay located at the foot of the attractive Playa de Fornells resort, Cala Tirant beach lies in a sheltered lagoon-like bay between two headlands. The protection of the headland shields the water here from the wind, giving it an almost lake-like appearance. This is a great spot for sailing and windsurfing. The beach has sun loungers, parasols and a couple of beach cafes. There are also public toilets, a Red Cross station and pedaloes for hire here.

Binimel-la Beach

On the northern coast, around 20 minutes’ drive from Son Parc lies the beautiful bay of Binimel-la. The drive here takes you through some of the nicest countryside on the side of the island. Here you’ll find a small, sandy horseshoe cove with sand dunes and a wetland area behind. There’s a free car park and a bar/restaurant nearby, and the eastern end of the beach has numerous small bays to explore. A great beach for those who like their coastline wild, rugged and secluded.
