Holidays in Cala'n Porter, Menorca

Cala’n Porter Holidays – A cliff-top resort with stunning sea views

One of the largest coastal towns on the central south coast of Menorca, Cala’n Porter offers close proximity to a large sandy beach, plenty of amenities and a lively atmosphere. The resort’s cliff-top location provides sweeping panoramic views out over the bay and across the turquoise sea. Access to the beach is via a number of steep steps, but there is also a road train that runs down from the town which is useful for those with walking difficulties. While most of the evening entertainment in Cala’n Porter will be hotel-based, there is also a good selection of bars in the resort centre and even a nightclub at the Cova d'en Xoroi. This is a great resort for families with small children, as Cala’n Porter beach is rated as one of the most child-friendly on the island, with its shallow warm waters and soft, clean sands. The neighbouring town of Son Bou also has a fantastic beach to visit for those looking to explore the area.

When to go

Cala’n Porter will be at its liveliest during the peak summer months of June-August. This period will see the hottest weather, but also the most expensive accommodation prices. The spring months of April-May are considered a lovely time to visit, as the island’s flowers are all coming into bloom and the weather is pleasantly hot. You will also find some excellent deals and offers on Cala’n Porter holidays over this time.

Autumn holidays to Cala’n Porter in September-October will also see lower prices than in the summer, with the weather remaining good well into October. If you travel in early September, you can visit the fantastic Festival of Mare de Deu de Gràcia in Mahon (just a 15 minute drive away)– a day of parades, fireworks, dancing and consumption of the much loved Menorcan gin drink, Pomada.

The weather in Cala’n Porter

While Menorca is generally cooler and wetter than the other Balearic Islands, it still sees typically Mediterranean weather with over 300 days of sunshine a year. The resort’s elevated cliff-top position means it benefits from a nice coastal breeze, which is very welcome during the heat of summer. Spring here is pleasantly warm, with average temperatures ranging between 17-21C. The summer months between June-August see average temperatures of 25-28C. Autumn remains hot well into October, with the mercury on average hovering between 22-25C. November-March is the winter period. By the beginning of November, there is an increased chance of rain, and those pleasant coastal breezes will have grown into the buffeting tramuntana winds from the north.

Getting the best deal

Package holidays to Cala’n Porter will be cheaper the earlier you book. The best deals and offers tend to sell out quickly, so booking well in advance gives you the advantage. If you have your heart set on a specific hotel, be aware that the most popular hotels will also see out fast so again you need to book as early as possible.

Try to avoid travelling during the school holiday at Easter and summer, as these periods are always more expensive. Peak season in Cala’n Porter is June-August. Travelling ‘off-peak’ in the spring or autumn months will see much lower prices without compromising on the weather.

Airport and transport need to know

You can fly to Menorca from over 15 UK airports, including London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, as well as Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh.

When you arrive, you will fly into the island’s sole international hub, the Menorca Mahon airport (MAH). This is a small, bustling place, with one terminal that is two storeys high and a small selection of shops and restaurants. The airport is around 2.5 miles from the island’s capital, Mahon.

Cala’n Porter benefits from its close proximity to the airport, with transfers taking just 15 minutes by car. There is a taxi rank outside the Arrivals hall. Taxis are 4 seater and operate on a fixed price basis. Generally they will not have child seats, so if you require a child seat you should ring up in advance and request one. On average, you should expect to pay around €20 for a taxi for 4 plus luggage.

You can also book a shared shuttle bus to the resort. This is a cheaper option – companies such as Shuttle Direct provide buses from the airport.

The third and cheapest option is to go by public bus. To take this option, you should catch the Airport-Mahon bus to the main bus depot. From here, you can pick up a connecting bus to Cala’n Porter. The service from Mahon-Cala’n Porter is limited however, and with the last service running at 19.40 Monday-Saturday and no service on a Sunday. You can download a PDF of the bus timetable from Mahon here.

The best beaches in Cala’n Porter

The southern coast of Menorca boasts the largest and most popular beaches on the island. The coast here tends towards large stretches of expansive sand, rather than the narrow rocky inlets of the west. The beaches also benefit from far better access to facilities and amenities than those on the west coast, as they are connected to bustling, lively resort towns.

Cala’n Porter beach

This is a large, sandy beach that is very popular with families. It is overlooked on three sides by high cliffs which extend out into the sea, creating a natural, sheltered cove with calm, shallow waters. The beach has excellent facilities including public toilets and a red cross/lifeguard post, as well as numerous bars and cafes. You can get to the beach from the resort by a number of steep steps, or by taking the road train that runs down from the town. The beach has sun beds and a parasols, and you can hire out kayaks.

Son Bou beach

Son Bou beach is a few kilometres north of Cala’n Porter and accessible by car in around 20 minutes. It has the longest stretch of sandy beach on the island at nearly 2 miles long. The eastern end of the beach is very well serviced by shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. The far western end of the beach is a popular hangout for nudists. This is a very popular beach with families and couples alike, and get quite busy during the peak summer months. There is a good range of watersports to try here, including banana boats, pedaloes and kayaks; please be aware that because of the strong undercurrent at the beach, a flag warning system is in operation and must be adhered to at all times.

Santo Tomas beach

Slightly further up the coast from Son Bou and taking around 30 minutes to reach from Cala’n Porter, Santo Tomas beach is another long stretch of fine, white sand. Like its two neighbours, this beach provides a good selection of facilities including cafes and bars. There is a good selection of watersports on offer here. The beach tends to attract a mix of couples and families. The promenade that runs along behind the beach makes a nice stroll in the evenings, with plenty of restaurants and tavernas looking out to sea for when you fancy a rest. For the more active, Son Bou is a pleasant 45 minute walk away along a cliff-top coastal path.
