Cala Blanca Holidays
Cala Blanca Holidays – Gorgeous white sandy beaches and plenty to do nearby
Located on the far western coast of Menorca, Cala Blanca is a modern, purpose built resort with two clean, white sand beaches. The resort has peaceful, laid-back feel, ideal for families with young children or couples looking for relaxation. While the resort does have a good selection of bars and the neighbouring resort of Cala Santandria has a nightclub, party animals will probably prefer Cala’n Forcat. For those looking to explore the area, the neighbouring town of Cuitadella (formerly the island’s capital) is a beautiful melting-pot of Moorish, Spanish and Baroque architecture, with excellent restaurants and cafes. Two nearby waterparks , the Aqua Center Water and Aqua Rock Waterpark, will keep the kids entertained, and for a taste of Menorca’s prehistoric past, visit the megalithic tombs of Naveta dels Tundons, dating back to 1200BC.
When to go
The busiest time of year to visit the resort are the summer months between June-August. During the winter (November-March) the resort virtually shuts down, with most businesses closing due to the deteriorating weather. For a combination of affordable prices and plenty of sunshine, the ‘off-peak’ periods of spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are recommended.
For the hottest weather, book a holiday to Cala Blanca during the summer. A particularly good time to visit is around the end of June (23rd-24th), when the Festes de Sant Joan occurs in nearby Cuitadella. This is the biggest, most boisterous festival in Menorca, with processions, parades, plenty of Menorca’s own gin-based drink Pomada, horse-racing and jousting in the streets.
The weather in Cala Blanca
Menorca is generally slightly wetter and a few degrees cooler than the more southerly Majorca, however it still sees around 300 days of sunshine a year, with 11 hours of sunshine per day during summer. Cala Blanca holidays will be pleasantly warm in the April and May, with average daytime temperatures around 18-21C. The summer months between June-July can get fairly hot during the day, with averages between 26-28C. September and October temperatures range from 26-22C. And the winter months between November-March can be chilly and wet, ranging from 14-18C. Airport and transport need to know
The Majorca Mahon airport (MAH) is the sole international hub on the island. It is fairly compact, with one 2-tiered terminal building and a small selection of shops and restaurants. Over 15 UK airports offer flights to Menorca, including London Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, as well as Manchester, Liverpool and various smaller regional airports like Norwich and Bristol.
Cala Blanca is located across the other side of the island from the airport, and as such transfers can take quite a long time. The distance is approximately 50km and it can take up to 1hour and 20 minutes by car.
The cheapest way to get to Cala Blanca from the airport is by public bus. This is also the longest way however. Take the Airport-Mahon bus to the central bus depot as Mahon. From there, get on a NR.1 or NR.14 bus towards Ciutadella. When you reach Ciutadella, go to the bus stops located at the Town Hall Square, and catch the bus headed to Cala Blanca.
You can also get a shared shuttle bus from the airport relatively cheaply from companies such as Menorca Airport Transfers. With these you won’t have to change and prices are around €25 for a return ticket.
For complete convenience, taxis can be caught from outside the Arrivals hall. Taxis are 4 seater, do not have child seats and operate on a ‘fixed price’ basis. It should cost around €55.
The best beaches in Cala Blanca
Menorca is possibly the best of the Balearic Islands for a beach holiday. The island has more secluded coves, sandy bays, and stretches of golden sand than both Ibiza and Majorca combined. The sand here tends to be very fine and either golden or white, and the warm waters of the Mediterranean ensure the sea is always welcoming. While the south of the island generally claims the better beaches on the island, there is some beautiful coastline to be explored on the far western shores also.
Cala Blanca Beaches
Cala Blanca has two small half-moon bays with gently sloping sands that are surrounded by an encircling rocky outcrop and fragrant pines. The beaches get their name from the colour of the sand, which is a beautiful white. The water here is calm and shallow, with snorkelling and diving popular activities. Due to their small size and close proximity to Ciutadella, these beaches can become crowed during peak summer. There is a good selection of bars and shops behind the beach.
Platja de Macarella
Considered one of the most beautiful beaches on Menorca, the Platja de Macarella is found between es Castellet de Macarella and Punta de na Xulla, approximately 14km from Ciutadella. This undeveloped, sandy cove is fairly small and encircled by pine-carpeted cliffs. A nearby wetland which is home to sea turtles and eels, as well as a canyon and the coastal ‘Path of Horses’ (Cami de Cavalls) gives this beach a wild, rugged feel. The beach has crystal clear waters and does not get particularly crowded. It is accessible by car and has a free car park.
Cala'n Bosch Beach
For this willing to travel a little further south, Cala'n Bosch is well worth a visit. A large, white-sandy beach near to the Marina de Cala en Bosch and Punta de sa Guarda. It is part of one of the biggest stretches of coastline in the area, and is well serviced by a large number of bars, shops and restaurants. The rocks to the side of the beach are a good spot to try some snorkelling.
