Santa Ponsa is one of Majorca’s most well-established beach holiday resorts and attracts a wide variety of visitors throughout the year. The resort is conveniently located just 20km west of the capital Palma and the Palma de Mallorca Airport on a beautiful stretch of Majorcan coastline with access to a superb selection of sandy beaches and coves. A wide variety of restaurants, bars and cafes are spread throughout the resort with many of these ideally positioned close to the beach or along one of the two main streets. There are also many small shops and boutiques as well as a local crafts market held in the evenings throughout the summer months.
Santa Ponsa offers a variety of activities keeping visitors entertained throughout the day and night. Families can make the most of the shallow waters at the resort’s two beaches as well as nearby attractions including the Western Waterpark, Aqualand and the Marineland wildlife centre. The resort also boasts three high quality golf courses for a relaxing day on the green. There are several live music venues and late night clubs in the resort attracting groups of friends in search of a lively atmosphere. In addition, you can head to the neighbouring resorts of Palma Nova and Magaluf for a guaranteed all-night party.
When to go
Santa Ponsa holidays are popular year-round, attracting a mixture of visitors at different times of the year. If you’re in search of a hassle-free family holiday and are restricted to travelling during the school holidays then the summer months of July and August are inevitably a good choice with the longest, hottest days and warmest waters. The resort does get busiest at this time of year however and can start to feel somewhat crowded in places. However, the beach has been extended with artificial sand to accommodate this and there are certainly enough cafes and restaurants to provide something for everyone. The cooler half of the year is a good choice if you are looking for a more relaxed feel and are able to enjoy an extended break in the winter sun.
The weather in Santa Ponsa
Santa Ponsa enjoys a pleasant coastal climate with the hot, dry summers eased by the occasional cooling sea breeze. Summer temperatures peak at around 29-30°C in August and average in the mid to late-20s throughout the months of June, July and into September. The temperature at night drops to around 18-20°C. Sea temperature at this time of year ranges from 21-24°C and stay above 20°C until approximately mid-November. The daytime temperatures throughout October and November are slightly cooler at around 18-22°C. This cools still further throughout the winter months of December to February with temperatures averaging around 12-14°C. Spring enjoys a pleasant climb back towards the low-20s by early May.
Getting the best deal
The extensive selection of holiday accommodation in Santa Ponsa ensures that there is bound to be a holiday to suit your budget and requirements. This does generally mean that a little research can go a long way when searching for the best deals. Most accommodation in the resort is in hotels and many of these are located very close to the beach. Slightly less expensive accommodation may be found further away from the shore and is definitely something to consider when looking into the different options. Airport and transport need to know
Santa Ponsa is a great choice for a convenient beach holiday in Majorca. When you fly here you will arrive at Palma de Mallorca Airport located just 20km east of the resort. Flights to Palma de Mallorca operate out of a large number of airports across the UK including all London airports and a number of smaller regional airports many of which offer seasonal flights during the peak summer months. Flight time is approximately 2.5 hours from most UK airports. Palma de Mallorca Airport is modern and compact with a good selection of shops, restaurants and fast food outlets serving the large volume of passengers passing through.
Once you have left the airport there are a number of transfer options to Santa Ponsa. Those travelling with a tour operator should have a coach transfer included in the price of their holiday. Alternatively, you can transfer to the resort by taxi which takes around 30-45 minutes and should cost approximately €40 (£32). Do bear in mind if you are travelling as a group however that taxis in Majorca are only licensed to carry a maximum of 4 passengers. There is also the option of travelling to Santa Ponsa using the local buses running between Palma and Santa Ponsa although this will involve a trip into the centre of Palma from the airport so is only really recommended if you are travelling light.
The best beaches in Santa Ponsa
The coastline surrounding Santa Ponsa boasts one of the highest densities of beaches across the whole of Majorca. This means that there is ample opportunity to enjoy every type of beach experience whilst you are on holiday here. We’ve picked out some great beaches in this area for all types of beach-goer.
Best beach for lazing on a sun lounger
The slightly smaller of the two main beaches in Santa Ponsa provides a convenient spot for spending a relaxing afternoon in the sun or shade. Just 15 minutes’ walk from the centre of the resort the beach is situated in a sheltered bay and has numerous sun loungers and parasols for hire. The shallow waters also make this a good choice for families with small children.
Best beach for activities
The main beach at Santa Ponsa is an excellent choice for beach activities and water sports offering everything from pedalo hire to windsurfing lessons. You can book any kind of water based activity in one of the many ticket offices throughout the town or from the small mobile ticket booth opposite the beach. For less active days, you can enjoy one of many boat trips from the beach, a popular choice being the 2 hour round trip from Santa Ponsa to Puerto Andratx.
Best beach for complete isolation
Situated a few kilometres north of Santa Ponsa on the border between Calvia and Andratx the small, rocky inlet of Calo des Monjo is perfect for getting away from it all. Here you will experience the rugged scenery and deeper blue waters of the untouched Majorcan coastline and will more than likely have the views all to yourself.
