Cala Millor Holidays – Experience Majorca’s idyllic east coast

Cala Millor is one of the largest holiday resorts on Majorca’s east coast attracting a wide variety of visitors throughout the year. The resort extends along an idyllic stretch of coastline and boasts picturesque surroundings with spectacular sunsets over the Mediterranean Sea. Linked by a wide promenade to the neighbouring resorts of Cala Bona and Sa Coma, Cala Millor is a good option for beaches as well as exploring the local area. Market days in the nearby towns of Son Severa (Fridays) and Arta (Tuesdays) are a particularly enjoyable way to experience local island life.

Cala Millor beach consists of a long stretch of golden sand situated in a sheltered bay between two major headlands making it a particularly safe environment for families with young children. In addition, Cala Millor is home to an extensive range of cafes, restaurants, bars and shops which are all easily accessed when strolling around the resort. There are also a number of nightclubs in Cala Millor; these are generally less lively than those found in other resorts across Majorca such as Palma Nova and Magaluf.

When to go to Cala Millor

Cala Millor is a popular resort year-round in Majorca although is unsurprisingly busiest during the blissful summer months of June, July and August. However, with approximately 60 hotels and more than 65 self-catering apartments spread across the resort finding accommodation is generally not a problem even during peak season. The beach, bars and restaurants do get busy at this time of year but there is enough choice on offer to avoid extensive over-crowding.

If you are keen to visit Majorca during its quieter and cooler moments however, spring (March to May) is a pleasant time to head to Cala Millor. Temperatures are picking up into the low-20s by late April and the resort is less busy allowing you to truly stretch out and relax. Of course the Easter holidays represent an exception to this rule but those restricted to travelling during the school holidays may also find this a marginally quieter time to visit Cala Millor.

The weather in Cala Millor

Daytime temperatures in Cala Millor range throughout the summer (June to August) from 25-29°C. Plus, with an average of around 10 hours of sunshine per day at this time of year there is plenty of time to get out and enjoy the best of it. Those sensitive to the heat may want to adopt the Spanish tradition of having a siesta from around midday to mid-afternoon to avoid the highest temperatures. Alternatively, temperatures in both spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) average in the high-teens and low-20s so may be more manageable. Sea temperature is also particularly high in September at around 24°C making a dip in the tranquil Mediterranean ever enticing.

Airport and transport need to know

To get to Cala Millor on the east coast of Majorca you will first fly in to Palma de Mallorca Airport on the western side of the island. This is a modern airport with all the shops, eating places and amenities you would expect from one of Europe’s busiest summertime airports. The airport is relatively easy to navigate although it is worth allowing a decent amount of time to negotiate the likely crowds during peak season. Flights operate to Palma de Mallorca Airport from a large number of airports across the UK and take around 2.5 hours. Remember to set your watch one hour ahead upon arrival.

Once you have arrived at the airport, the transfer to Cala Millor takes around 1.5-2 hours depending somewhat on your mode of travel. Coach transfers are likely to be slightly longer than taxi transfers but the difference is marginal. If you are planning to travel by taxi to Cala Millor then these can be picked up easily (although you may have to queue) from outside the arrivals hall at the airport. Families should be aware that Majorcan taxis are only licensed to carry 4 passengers and child seats should be pre-arranged. Finally, you may wish to travel to Cala Millor under your own steam with a hire car. The 70km journey is relatively straightforward although be sure to have an up-to-date road map to hand as many of the roads in Majorca have been renumbered in recent years.

The best beaches in Cala Millor

The east coast of Majorca offers a selection of beaches from lively, sandy beaches popular with tourists to pebbly coves that are harder to reach but often well worth the effort. We’ve chosen some of the best beaches near Cala Millor for you to explore.

Best Beach for lazing on a sun lounger: Just a short walk from Cala Millor, the smaller neighbouring resort of Cala Bona boasts a pretty stretch of fine sand perfect for a relaxing afternoon out. Cala Bona beach has sun loungers and parasols a plenty and a good selection of cafes, restaurants and quiet bars running along the back of the beach where you can sample some traditional Majorcan cuisine.

Best Beach for activities: Cala Millor’s main beach is a lively fun-packed beach with a wide selection of watersports to keep even the most energetic holidaymaker busy. Water-skiing, jet-skiing, banana-boating, SCUBA diving, boardsailing and fishing are just some of the activities on offer. The Watersport Center located on the beach just in front of the Riu Playa Cala Millor Hotel is a good place to book most water-based activities or alternatively look out for signs along the beach.

Best Beach for complete isolation: Sa Pedruscada beach in the Capdepera district north of Cala Millor offers you the chance to sample a truly serene slice of the Majorcan coast. The beach is small and pebbly so not ideal for sunbathing but the calm, shallow sea is perfect for snorkelling and the lack of development in the surrounding area means that you will often have the whole beach to yourself. Sa Pedruscada can be accessed by car or bus although the latter is probably an easier option for those less confident with navigating the slightly tricky roads.
