Majorca Holidays – An island of opportunities

The sun-kissed Mediterranean island of Majorca lies 500 miles off the east coast of Spain in the tranquil Mediterranean Sea. Largest of the Balearic Islands, Majorca is blessed with almost 250 miles of diverse coastline, a host of picturesque towns and villages and dramatic mountain scenery spanning the northern coast. As a well-established holiday hotspot the island offers an unrivalled selection of activities and amenities making Majorca holidays effortless and enjoyable from start to finish. If you’re in search of wide sandy beaches, family friendly amenities and Mediterranean cuisine then resorts such as Cala d’Or and Alcudia are excellent options. Alternatively, Magaluf and Palma Nova, well-known for their lively nightlife, are popular with groups of friends looking for fun, sun and sea.

When to go to Majorca

Majorca’s Mediterranean climate makes it a beautiful place to visit all year round. The summer period, from June to September, is the busiest time on the island with beaches and resorts at their sun-soaked finest. Summer offers the widest selection of accommodation and amenities on Majorca but do be aware that popular hotels and restaurants can get busy and holiday extras such as car hire should be booked well in advance.

Spring and autumn on Majorca are both quieter and generally less expensive times to visit. Hiking and cycling holidays are two great ways to see the island at these times whilst avoiding the high summer temperatures. The winter period from December to March is quieter still and provides the opportunity to marvel at Majorca’s 4000 almond trees in full bloom.

The weather in Majorca

Daytime temperatures in Majorca range from a modest 14-15°C during the winter months (December to March) to a high of around 29°C during the hottest summer month of August. All four summer months (June to September) however see maximum daytime temperatures in the mid-late 20s and evening temperatures dropping only occasionally below 18°C. Warm evenings and up to 11 hours of sunshine during these months allow you to make the most of the superb Majorcan climate. Rainfall is minimal throughout the summer too although this begins to rise towards the end of September. The wettest months in Majorca are from October to December.

Getting the best deal to Majorca

Airport and transfer need to know

Palma de Mallorca Airport (also referred to as Son Sant Joan Airport) is the main international airport in Majorca. A large number of UK airports offer flights to Majorca year-round including all London airports, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle, East Midlands, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Seasonal flights are also available from a number of airports including Southampton, Leeds/Bradford, Birmingham, Cardiff and Aberdeen. Flight time from most UK airports to Majorca is around 2.5 hours.

Palma de Mallorca Airport is a modern building with a range of amenities including a good selection of shops and large number of cafes and restaurants. During the peak tourist season however it becomes one of the busiest airports in Europe meaning the facilities can get crowded. In addition, the departure gates are located a considerable distance from the check-in desks so it is worth allowing yourself plenty of time to negotiate the airport particularly when leaving the island.

The airport is located 8km east of the Majorcan capital Palma. Transfer to Palma by taxi is generally easy and efficient with a large taxi rank located just outside the arrivals hall. You can also travel by taxi to most other destinations in Majorca. If you are travelling as a family or group however, note that taxis in Majorca are only licensed to carry a maximum of 4 passengers. If you are travelling light, there are also two bus services (routes 1 and 21) operating from the airport to the capital with pick-up points located across from the arrivals hall.

A selection of top resorts in Majorca

Probably the most famous resort in Majorca is Magaluf located just 15km west of Palma and the Palma de Mallorca Airport. Well-known for its lively nightlife, Magaluf is particularly popular with groups of young people in search of low-cost package holidays. However, given its convenient location and range of amenities Magaluf is also worth considering for families and couples outside of the busy summer months. The beaches are clean and expansive (although do get busy during the peak season) and offer a wide variety of activities both in and out of the water. Similarly, the pedestrianised promenades, lined with an endless selection of shops, bars and restaurants are a lively focal point for both day and nighttime activities. A top resort for those in search of sun, sea and non-stop entertainment.

For family holidays in Majorca, Alcudia on the northern coast is a popular choice with its expansive sandy beach and warm, shallow waters. A wide range of water sports are on offer along the beach including windsurfing and water-skiing and you are never far from one of the many beachside cafés and restaurants. The Alcudia waterpark (Hidropark) is also a draw for many families and a trip into the historic Old Town is another enjoyable daytime option. Transfer time to Alcudia is approximately 1-1.5 hours by bus or taxi from the airport.

Finally, the relaxed town of Cala d’Or in the south east is a good option for families or couples looking to escape the hustle and bustle of some of the larger resorts. A fine selection of sandy beaches and coves make this an enjoyable place to explore whilst the up market marina at Cala Llonga offers a host of relaxed dining options. Boat trips around the southern coast are a particularly pleasant way to spend an afternoon followed by a stroll through the winding streets to soak in the ambience of this old fishing village. Transfer time to Cala d’Or is around 1.5-2 hours by bus or taxi from the airport.
