Escape to the sun and beat the crowds
Freezing temperatures of a typical British winter set us craving the summer and the sunshine. That’s why so many of us are now opting for winter holidays in the sun. Within a matter of hours you can be reclining on a lounger, slapping on the sun cream, and gazing out at life-affirming, sparkling blue seas.
Benefits of taking your holidays in mid winter, include securing excellent rates on package deals, avoiding the peak tourist rush in resorts that are often experienced in the summer months, and finding out-of-season travel far easier for you and the family. For families with young children, and perhaps older holiday travellers, hitting the beaches when the sun is soothing, rather than scorching, is another factor that recommends winter holidays.
Which resort will banish your winter blues?
Winter holidays on the Spanish Costas have long warmed the hearts of British sun-seekers. From Brit-oriented Benidorm to the quieter beaches of Roquetas and the glamour of Marbella, there’s a resort to suit every need along Spain’s sun-blessed Mediterranean coastline. The Spanish Canary Islands also boast warm winters - around 20C in January compared to the height of summer’s typical 29C temperature. Here you’ll find safe, sandy beaches, welcoming resorts, all types of accommodation, and fascinating rural landscapes to explore. Soft sand and warm climes can also be found throughout the year on the coast of Turkey.
Holidays taken at resorts like Marmaris, Kusadasi or Bodrum during the winter months will be spent shopping in traditional bazaars, exploring fishing harbours, snorkelling and taking boat trips, as well as indulging in that all-important beach relaxation. It's worth remembering that in some resorts, restaurants and bars may have restricted opening off-peak.
Distant shores beckon
For some, exotic long-haul locations beckon when considering winter getaways. Mexico is increasingly popular for adventurous breaks, while Caribbean islands like Barbados, Dominican Republic and St Lucia feature irresistible palm-fringed beaches and laid-back resorts - ideal for romantic couples. You might consider an African safari, or why not head to the Gulf Coast of Florida to catch that golden tan on long stretches of sumptuous beach, sheltered in the Gulf of Mexico? Winter holidays can be a healthy tonic for all age groups, and will certainly help you avoid the coughs and colds of home.
