Scuba diving
The warm, crystal clear waters around Madeira are perfect for viewing the huge variety of fish species attracted to the area, including dolphins and rays. Several diving schools and leisure companies, located mainly in Funchal and Canico de Baixo, provide diving courses for all levels.

Whale and Dolphin spotting
Madeira's mid ocean setting means the island is a regular stop-off point for migrating whales and dolphins. The deep waters surrounding Madeira mean they can come very close to the island so spotting the varied species is made easy. Boat safaris are readily available for those who want to take a closer look as at these magnificent creatures.

Take a balloon trip
For a stunning view of the island, Funchal has a panoramic balloon that lifts visitors 150 metres above the town giving a wonderful perspective of the surrounding area and a fun trip. The museum at the base station also provides a fascinating history of Madeira and is well worth a visit.
