The village of Canico sits inland, at the top of a steep winding road, with stunning views out over the Atlantic. With its' main square and 18th century church, the village of Canico retains an air of tradition, and the shops, bars and restaurants are often busy with locals. The fast-growing Canico De Baixo is home to a small pebbly beach and a choice of accommodation, with a limited selection of bars, restaurants and shopping, most based in the hotels. Canico De Baixo has great facilities for water-sports, such as windsurfing, canoeing and water-skiing, and the resort is a known as one of the islands' premier scuba-diving spots. The dive schools in Canico De Baixo can introduce divers to the wealth of caves and grottos out in the domestic reef, filled with parrot fish and barracudas.

Explore the wonderful marine nature reserve
Next to the coastal resort of Canico de Baixois is Garajau, set in the eastern part of the Bay of Funchal, and home to a natural marine reserve with its' vast array of rays, fish and turtles. The area around Canico is known for its' wonderful walks, with the vast network of famous levadas (irrigation channels) leading into the green hills and valleys of the countryside, home to some stunning flora and fauna. Golfers will be spoilt for choice in Canico, with 2 championship golf courses close by, the 18-hole Palheiro and the 27-hole Santo de Serra, home of the Madeira Open - both with spectacular views - and there are also facilities for tennis in the resort of Canico De Baixo. The bustling capital city of Funchal is just a short drive away, where you can stroll the cobbled streets, take in the colonial buildings, visit the famous Botanical Gardens, or take a boat trip around Madeira from the harbour.

Weather in Canico
Situated on the sun drenched island of Madeira, the village of Canico enjoys an enviable sub tropical climate ensuring bright sunshine all year round and high season temperatures that are rarely oppressive to the average sun worshipper. Weather in Canico is extremely settled with very low annual rainfall and pleasantly mild winter temperatures. Due to warm ocean currents and the influence of the North East trade winds, the weather in Madeira is rarely extreme and Canico is a popular destination all year round. The only real likelihood of wet weather is between the months of December and March and even then mild sunshine prevails for most of the time. Madeira's mounatinous interior offers protection from the coolest weather fronts and as a result, Canico enjoys the best of Madeira weather.
