Beaches
The sandy stretch at Tavira Island is accessible by ferry from the town, and boasts Blue Flag beaches with white sands and warm waters. Beach bars offer convenient refreshment, and there are water sports such as windsurfing, kite surfing and body surfing for active visitors, and fishing trips available. Quieter more peaceful beaches include Cabanas Beach or Barril Island.
The Town
Tavira is packed with historic sites and attractions, including the landmark Moorish Castle, a huge number of 18th century churches and the Roman bridge that site over the Gilao River. It's a delightful town to tour, and has plenty to explore in its picturesque town centre, from the bustling main square, colourful local market and tiny cobbled streets to the vibrant fishing harbour, lush gardens and peaceful waterfronts.
Walking & Hiking
Tavira has a number of town walks to follow which take in the local sights, and for nature-lovers, the Ria Formosa Natural Park is a haven for hikers, home to sand dunes full of local flora and fauna. The area is an important habitat for migrating birds, making it a popular destination for avid bird-watchers.
Mountain Biking
The town paths are excellent for cycling, and for those looking to really explore the area, the surrounding countryside is home to many off-the-beaten-track routes. There are itineraries for all level of rider, taking cyclists through beautiful green landscapes full of orange groves and fig trees, or along scenic coastal trails.
Golf
Golfers can choose from three golf courses in Tavira, with the warm climate and abundance of sunshine creating fantastic conditions for an enjoyable round. Benamor Golf Club offers views of both the mountains and the Atlantic coastline, whilst Quinta da Ria Golf Club and Quinta de Cima Golf Clubs are both located in the peaceful Natural Park.
Sports
Hotels have swimming pools, tennis courts and gyms, whilst adventurous guests can try hang gliding and hot air ballooning. Horse riding can be enjoyed from the resort, with both hourly rides and full-day treks available through the countryside and along the coast.
Eating & Drinking
Tavira boasts plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants in which to try the local Portuguese cuisine, including lots of family-run establishments with open air terraces and patios. Freshly-caught fish and seafood are the order of the day here, with sardines being the local speciality.
