Moncarapacho Holidays
Moncarapacho Holidays – Country and coast, the perfect mix
To enjoy the rural life, with the aroma of oranges, lemons and figs in the air, but only a short drive to the gloriously warm water and soft sandy beaches of the Mediterranean, there can be no other choice than a holiday in Moncarapacho. This small country village in the Eastern Algarve exudes peacefulness and an unhurried ambience, where people go about their daily life in calm and friendly manner, or take a drink below the jacaranda and palm trees in the delightful cobbled square next to the village church.
This is the ideal spot for couples and families who prefer a quiet holiday not over-run with holidaymakers. Moncarapacho has all you need; three supermarkets, restaurants and cafes, a bank, a post office where you can send the postcards to make your friends envious, and an excellent market on the first Saturday of each month, (it even has a delightful pink, Moorish-style police station). The village is known for the quality of its ceramics and fine leather work for horses, and with the locality being a major producer of flowers, bright colours will fill your eye wherever you look.
If you feel the need to explore, Estoi, ten kilometres away, is another peaceful historic village, with some important Roman ruins and a beautiful 18th-century palace; an ideal day out to discover something of Portuguese local history. But you are also only a short drive to the glorious beaches of Eastern Algarve, less crowded and developed than their western neighbours.
When to go
Life is still lived very much to the seasons in Moncarapacho, and each will bring its own pleasures. If you enjoy a good country fair, now almost non-existent in the UK, over four days at the beginning of August each year, Moncarapacho has a huge agricultural market, with traditional local food and lots of music and dancing. In February the Carnaval held in the village is much bigger than you would expect, and attracts revellers from many of the local towns and villages.
If you want to avoid the feeling of being just another tourist, try and take your holidays out of high season, when you are likely to come across more visitors whose holidays are fixed by school closing dates.
Weather in Moncarapacho
The idyllic childhood memory of long, hot summer days spent in the countryside can be experienced again in Moncarapacho – although the days will be a long hotter and have more hours of sunshine than you would ever have experienced in the UK, around 29º in July and twelve hours of blue skies daily. Spring is a total delight, as the flowers from the local growers begin to bloom, and the scent of orange and lemon blossom fills the air. Autumn is best if you want to walk the surrounding hillsides and appreciate the beautiful scenery without having to search out shade from the searing summer sun.
Getting the best deal
This is where you have to make a decision; are you going to hang on as long as possible and hope you get a good deal or book early to make sure you have the holiday home of your choice. Moncarapacho is not a high-rise holiday resort with oodles of accommodation, so it’s best to begin looking early.
You could keep costs down by self-catering, and Moncarapacho has everything you need, but another option is all inclusive, which means you can simply enjoy yourself without thinking of having to prepare food or how much a drink is costing you. This doesn’t mean that you have to eat and drink at your hotel every day, but it does mean that the savings you make will allow you a fancy meal out a couple of times during your stay.Look below for our current best deal, and keep checking our late offers.
Airport and transport need to know
There are over twenty airports in the UK and Ireland with flights to Faro airport in the Algarve, including Liverpool (LPL), Stansted (STN), Cork (ORK), Exeter (EXT) and Edinburgh (EDI). Budget, charter and schedule airlines have routes, including Ryanair, EasyJet, Jet2, Aer Lingus, Thomson Flights, Air Berlin, British Airways and Monarch. From March to October a greater number of flights are on offer to carry the large numbers of holiday makers to the Algarve.
Moncarapacho is only a twenty-minute drive from Faro airport, which should only take about half-an-hour by taxi. However, because you will need transport if you would like to enjoy exploring this delightful area or you want to visit the beach regularly, you will find it much more economical and convenient to hire a car. An Opal Corsa or equivalent will cost around 160€ (£130) for a week in high season, and there are a number car hire companies at the airport which can supply cars booked on-line. You will usually find you can get a better price booking through an on-line agency than going direct to the car hire company, but check on any specific regulations that either an agency or local supplier might include in the contract.
Best beaches in Moncarapacho
If you choose a holiday in Moncarapacho you probably aren’t looking for a beach-based vacation, but as you are so close to the beautiful beaches of the eastern Algarve it would be a shame if you didn’t visit one at least once.
Probably the loveliest beach is the Ilha de Tavira, Tavira Island, an eleven kilometre-long sandspit beach that is considered one of the best in the Algarve. It is so long that there is always plenty of space to spread your towel on the sands. One of the delights of visiting this beach is that you can only get to it by water taxi or the small ferries that run from Tavira and Quatro Aguas, adding to the holiday fun. Tavira Island is part of the nature reserve of Ria Formosa, and is very popular with bird watchers, as it is with naturists, who have their own section of the island on which to get an all-over tan.
Closer to Moncarapacho is Fuseta, a traditional fishing village where the boats still bring in the catch of the day, and local water-taxis ferry passengers across the lagoon to the beach with its white sands, beach bars and cafes.
