A relaxing purpose-built beach resort
Altura, on the eastern side of the Algarve, just a 40 minute transfer from Faro airport, is a relaxing purpose-built beach resort, ideal for families. The resort is ideally placed for those who enjoy golf, with three excellent golf courses within a 15 minute drive, and is close to both the picturesque Roman town of Tavira, and the busy high-rise resort of Monte Gordo. Altura is also just an hour and a half from the Spanish border, meaning daytrips into Seville are a possibility.

A fantastic family resort
The eastern part of the Algarve is less developed and unspoilt than the central and western parts, with this stretch of coastline home to some excellent sandy beaches. Along the stretch of coast from Tavira along to Monte Gordo there are no less than five Blue Flag beaches. Alturas’ beach is long and wide, with clean sands and a variety of watersports on offer, and there are good parking facilities and a beach-bar/restaurant for those much needed-refreshments. Altura offers plenty of accommodation options, including apartments, hotels and villas, with some properties on the front and most within walking distance of the sandy beach. The atmosphere in Altura is relaxed with some bars for evening entertainment, and the resort is known for its’ excellent quality of restaurants. Monte Gordo, just 10 minutes from Altura, is the most commercial resort on the eastern coast, and is fairly lively, with much more nightlife including a casino.

Excellent golf courses close by
Apart from relaxing on the beach, wind-surfing or fishing, visitors to Altura can explore the area on bikes, or take advantage of the excellent golfing facilities. The countryside inland is beautiful, and the market town of Tavira is a nice place to visit - quiet, elegant and traditional, with its’ Roman bridge and city walls, fishing harbour and indoor market.

Altura Weather
Altura holidays are virtually guaranteed glorious summers and mild winters. Situated on the east of the Algarve, it enjoys a Mediterranean-type climate and is slightly warmer than the west. Known as the Sotavento (or leeward) side of the coast, the area around Altura is perfect for family beach holidays, although there are one or two places that attract windsurfers. In fact there is a gentle sea breeze that makes the temperature feel a little cooler than it really is and helps moderate the humidity. Temperatures can rise towards 40°C in high summer, although the average high is more like 28°C.
