According to a survey conducted by VisitBritain, 66% of overseas visitors to the UK use a mobile phone while here. The results came from the Office for National Statistics’ International Passenger Survey, and revealed that almost 20 million overseas visitors made us of a mobile phone in Britain last year – a fact that has prompted VisitBritain to launch its UK Top 50 places app through iTunes.
Completely free, the app lets visitors view the most popular attractions in the UK through Facebook, find out what is near to them and obtain discounts.
Head of Online at VisitBritain, Justin Reid, said: : ‘It is clear with the advances in technology and the ever increasing demand for mobile phone usage abroad that there is a demand to get tourists to top attractions across Britain in a creative and fun way – our UK Top50 app does exactly that.’
According to research by VisitBritain, 60% of tourists had used their mobile at least once during their holiday.
The highest proportion of those were in the 35-44 age group. Visitors from Norway and the United Arab Emirates were most likely to make or receive calls – around 80% - but people from Canada and Japan were far less likely to, at around 40%.
Unsurprisingly, visitors on business were much more likely to be found using a laptop while abroad, particularly those from Brazil (88%) and the USA (80%).
According to the survey, visitors from Hong Kong (57%) and the UAE (54%) were more prolific laptop users than their counterparts from around the globe.
