Venice Suffers Worst Floods For 20 Years

Tuesday, 09 December 2008

venice city breaksThe worst flooding in 20 years has submerged much of the city of Venice leaving tourists either stranded or knee deep in water. Yesterday sirens were heard across St Mark’s square as freezing temperatures and surging water from the Adriatic have added to fears of more flooding to come.

Residents and tourist have been advised to avoid all but completely unnecessary travel around the city. Mayor Cacciari said: “Anyone thinking of coming should think again. These are exceptionally high waters. Don’t venture out unless it is necessary.”

Many tourists currently on Venice city breaks have experienced their hotels without either electricity or gas, whilst a national transport strike has added to their woes by ensuring there is no water bus service in operation.

The water in Venice has risen to over 5ft above sea level, making it the highest during aqua alta since 1986, whilst tide monitoring officials claim that levels could yet reach a 30-year high if they continue as they are. This would eclipse the 6ft 4in above sea level reached in 1966. It is not only Venice that has been affected by bad weather; much of Italy, including Rome, is currently suffering from heavy rain, snow, hail and high winds.
