Tokyo to see two new Merlin attractions opened

Monday, 27 June 2011
As part of an ‘aggressive’ growth plan, Merlin Entertainment intends to open two new attractions in Tokyo. October 2011 will see a Madame Tussards opened in one of Tokyo’s premiere shopping and leisure centres; Decks Tokyo Beach Mall in Odaiba, Tokyo Bay.

And a $15m LEGOLAND Discovery Centre (LDC) is scheduled to follow this in spring 2012, in the same mall.

The fourth to open in the Asia Pacific region, Madame Tussauds Tokyo will join sister attractions in, Bangkok , Hong Kong and Shanghai, as well as a fifth that will open in Sydney early in 2012.

At first it will be a temporary exhibition, but if demand requires it, Merlin intends to make it a permanent feature with added waxworks.

The attractions at Decks Mall are indicative of Merlin’s aggressive growth plan, the company says, with 6 or 7 new sites for its brands being developed every year, and a continued investment in new experiences and improved customer service for all its existing attractions globally, of which there are now more than 70.

The company says that the Asia Pacific region promises a ‘particularly exciting development area’, after the acquisition of 6 new attractions in Australia and New Zealand, and the opening of a major LEGOLAND theme park in Malaysia in 2012 scheduled.

Merlin intends to continue expanding in this area, looking for additional sites around Japan for its brands, primarily LEGOLAND Discovery Centres and SEA LIFE, Merlin’s global aquarium brand.
In other news, LEGOLAND Florida is due to open on 15 October 2011. This will be the world’s largest LEGOLAND theme park, halfway between Orlando and Tampa, and features more than 50 rides, shows and attractions.
