Tuesday, 09 December 2008

cheap flightsA 24 hour strike by air traffic controllers means that there will be no flights to and from Greece tomorrow. Hundreds of flights are affected by the industrial action which has followed 3 nights of riots and protests over the government’s economic policies. Disruptions have occurred all over the country and are expected to continue tonight.

Greek airport staff will begin the scheduled strike at 10 pm (GMT). Once the strike begins, no flights will be allowed to or from any Greek airports. The action has affected British Airways who confirm that seven flights, originally destined for Athens and Thessaloniki, are to be cancelled. Similarly, low cost airline easyJet has had to cancel eight of its flights from the UK. Other airlines affected include Olympic Airlines, Aegean Airlines and Thomas Cook Airlines.

The Foreign Office is advising travellers to be extremely cautious when visiting urban areas, especially Athens, adding that strikes and demonstrations should be expected over the next month.

Both British Airways and easyJet have confirmed that they will be offering refunds or rescheduled flights to those passengers affected. Concerned travellers have been advised to contact their airline or tour operator.
